Kahuku High School junior Clinton Parks smiled and exchanged high-fives and hugs with teammates around the basketball court last night after his team's 57-55 victory over Kalaheo.

"Yes!" Parks said. "The curse is over!"

According to Kahuku coach Nathan James, it was the Red Raiders' first win over the Mustangs in at least 15 years.

But more important, it put Kahuku (9-1) in the driver's seat as the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division schedule winds down this weekend. The Red Raiders lead Kalaheo, Kaimuki and Roosevelt (each 8-2) by one game, with one game remaining.

Kahuku plays Kaimuki, Kalaheo plays Kaiser and Roosevelt plays Kailua.

Last night's crucial showdown had originally been scheduled to be played at Kahuku, but was moved to McKinley's Student Council Gym so it could be shown on live statewide TV.

"We wanted to play at home," said Red Raiders forward Junior Ale, who finished with a team-high 15 points. "But tonight we proved we can play anywhere."

Kahuku held on despite missing three straight free throws in the final nine seconds. Parks made a steal after the first miss, then Ale rebounded the second miss of a two-shot bonus.

The Mustangs built a 38-30 lead midway through the third period, but Kevin Unga and Ale sparked a 9-2 run to help the Red Raiders rally back and Ale's putback with 4:06 remaining in the game gave them the lead for good at 49-48.
