Malama Manuma hit a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning yesterday to break a 2-2 tie and lift visiting Kapolei to a 6-2 victory over Moanalua in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association softball quarterfinals.
Kapolei (10-4) will face Pearl City (12-1) at 5:30 p.m. today at Central O'ahu Regional Park in the first semifinal game, followed by Kailua (13-0) and Mililani (11-2) about 7 p.m.
Manuma, one of the key players on the Hurricanes' OIA and state championship team last season, was out with a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury until last Friday's regular season finale against Mililani.
She came to the plate in the eighth inning yesterday with the bases filled and two outs.
Manuma drilled a pitch over the center-field fence, and the Menehunes could only manage one base runner in the bottom half of the inning.
Moanalua took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Traci Yoshikawa's RBI groundout, then scored again in the fourth on Kandyce Love's run-scoring single. Austi Paris tied it in the fifth with a two-run homer over the left-field fence.
