After 37 years, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association will have a new boys basketball champion tomorrow.
Campbell, which has never won an OIA title, will play Kahuku (last OIA crown: 1968) at 7:30 p.m. at McKinley High School's Student Council Gym.
At McKinley High School
Tomorrow
6 p.m. Kaimuki (10-4) vs. Kalaheo (10-3), third place
7:30 p.m. Campbell (11-1) vs. Kahuku (12-1)
Both games live on OC-16 "It feels great knowing we have a chance to win Campbell's first (OIA) championship," said junior guard Mark Hayes, who finished with a game-high 19 points last night. "Our school won a (Division II state) football championship (in December), and now everybody is hoping for us to win a basketball championship, too."
Hayes helped seal that opportunity by scoring nine points in the final period, including 7 of 10 free throws as the Sabers protected a 32-26 lead after three quarters.
Earlier, he gave Campbell the lead for good when he broke an 18-18 tie with a 3-pointer with 1:25 remaining in the half.
Sabers coach Sol Batoon said Hayes, who came off the bench, is one of several players on his team capable of a 19-point night.
"We're eight-deep," Batoon said. "Any one of them can score; whoever's in there, any of the five players on the court can do it."
James Bannister added 10 points for Campbell. David Moore led Kalaheo with 18 points.
Kahuku played in the OIA title games in 1991 and 1988, but since then has been mostly recognized as the league's premier football power.
"I've been waiting for this since I was a little kid," said Red Raiders point guard Clinton Parks, who scored a game-high 20 points last night. "That was my goal when I first moved here (from Riverside, Calif.) last year, to change things. My mom went to Kahuku, so I knew it wasn't known as a basketball school. I wanted to help do something different."
Parks, a 5-foot-10 junior, did his part last night by scoring eight points in the decisive fourth period. Backcourt mate Shane Haden also scored eight points in the final quarter, including a three-point play with 1:10 remaining to put Kahuku up for good at 54-53.
The Bulldogs (10-4) stayed within a point until 22 seconds left, when Junior Ale sank two free throws to make it 58-55. Devin Unga then made a steal and converted a layup and free throw with five ticks remaining to seal it.
The Red Raiders had won the teams' regular season meeting two weeks ago, 66-50.
"Kaimuki is a good team with good players and good coaches," Parks said. "They gave us all we could handle tonight."
