Pearl City scored five goals in the second half to obliterate a one-goal halftime deficit and advance to today's quarterfinals of the HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies Girls Soccer State Championship.

Pearl City's Chloe Maeshiro is sandwiched by Kapa'a's Erin Pickett, left, and Erica Brewer while battling for control of the ball during a first-round match of the girls' state high school soccer tournament.

The Chargers defeated Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champ Kapa'a, 6-2, yesterday in a first-round game at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex, and will play Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ Punahou (8-2-2) tonight at 7.

Other quarterfinal matchups are Maui Interscholastic League champ Baldwin against Moanalua at 1 p.m., Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Hilo versus Mililani at 3 p.m., and O'ahu Interscholastic Association champ 'Aiea against Konawaena 5 p.m.

Forward Chelsea Arakawa scored two goals and midfielder Chimene Sienkiewicz, forward Chloe Maeshiro, midfielder/forward Ashley Miyano and midfielder/forward Carisa Calpo each scored one for Pearl City (12-1-1).

"We weren't getting to the ball first," Arakawa said of being down 2-1 at the half. "I guess we were a little scared; the pressure of an important first game."

The Warriors (5-2-2) scored first on a goal by midfielder Kaala Leong in the 13th minute, and Arakawa tied the score on an assist from forward Lauren Maeshiro in the 23rd minute.

Kapa'a midfielder Joanne Kaona scored in the 34th minute on a penalty kick — after Pearl City was called for a hand ball in the penalty box — for the 2-1 halftime lead.

"Basically, we came out and dominated, we played to perfection," Kapa'a coach Crissy Marti said. "They came off (the field) and I told them they played perfect. I think maybe it got to their head a little bit."

In the second half, Pearl City co-head coach Frank Baumholtz III said he played some players he brought up from the junior varsity team and that changed the momentum.

"All of a sudden the attitude changed," he said.

"The new combination worked well," said Sienkiewicz, who tied the match in the 44th minute on an assist from midfielder Cheryl Yasumoto, who crossed the ball after receiving a pass from midfielder Nestle Yamaguchi down the right sideline.

"We were a little flat in the beginning," Sienkiewicz said. "We're all a little sick; the flu is going around our school."

The Chargers took the lead on a goal by Maeshiro, who received a 35-yard long ball from Yamaguchi from the right side in the 56th minute.

Arakawa scored her second goal in the 59th minute on a header off a 35-yard free kick from midfielder Deanna Llacuna.

"Once we get goals, it starts motivating everyone," Arakawa said.

Miyano scored in the 71st minute on a cross from the right side that found her open on the back door, and Calpo finished the scoring with one minute remaining on an indirect kick from about 25 yards on the left side that curled into the upper right corner of the goal.

Konawaena 2, Kailua 1 (PKs): The Wildcats (12-5) of the BIIF outscored the OIA's Surfriders (8-3-3), 7-6 on penalty kicks. Konawaena's Kellie Kitaoka, LeAnna Dahl, Kirstee Biven, Jamie Hirai, Aiko Bray, Grace Hedemann and Jennie Barto converted their kicks, and goalkeeper Marissa Minor stopped Kailua's seventh shooter. Kailua forward/midfielder Tanya Sasaoka scored in the 62nd minute and Konawaena's Hirai tied the game four minutes later.

Moanalua 3, Kealakehe 2 (OT): Kim Ito scored three minutes into overtime for the Menehunes (8-2-4) of the OIA. Ayasha Abut scored in the 28th minute and Ashley Dolan scored in the 43rd minute to erase a 2-0 Kealakehe lead. Laura Franke scored in the seventh and 20th minutes for Kealakehe (13-5) of the BIIF.

Mililani 2, King Kekaulike 0: Raimee Ortega and Cami Kageno scored for the Trojans (11-1-2) of the OIA. Ortega scored in the 37th minute after Natalie Wong drove the left sideline and crossed the ball. Kageno scored the insurance goal in the 73rd minute. The MIL's King Kekaulike dropped to 6-4-1.

Note: Saturday's championship and third-place games will be televised live on OC-16. The third-place game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 8 p.m.
