Hilo's Gregory Meyer birdied the first playoff hole at Pearl Country Club to earn one of four spots in this week's Sony Open in Hawai'i.

The Sony Open begins Thursday at Waialae Country Club.

Sean Murphy, a PGA member from Scottsdale, Ariz., and Nationwide Tour member Christopher Tidland of Stillwater, Okla., tied for medalist honors at 7-under-par 65.

Meyer, Dick Mast of Big Sandy, Texas, and Hunter Haas of Fort Worth, Texas, were tied at 66.

After Meyer, a Pearl Country Club pro, earned the third spot, Mast got the final spot with a birdie on the second playoff hole.

A total of 101 golfers from Hawai'i, the Mainland and Japan participated in the qualifier.

Among the Hawai'i golfers failing to qualify were Dean Wilson (67) and Norman-Ganin Asao, Jeffrey Ferry, Parker McLachlin and Earl Medeiros, who each shot 70.
