No. 1 Iolani tops Kamehameha, 43-41

Kawika Shoji swished a 15-foot turnaround jumper as time expired last night to lift the Iolani School boys basketball team to a pulsating 43-41 victory over visiting Kamehameha.

KAWIKA SHOJI

The three-time defending state champion Raiders, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with their 88th consecutive win over a Hawai'i opponent.

Kamehameha, ranked No. 5, fell to 1-2.

The Warriors, however, might be the league's scariest team to play right now considering they are just hitting their stride after a late start because of a long football season.

"They play very, very hard and they're exceptionally quick," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "They're hard to contain on defense, and on offense we're normally a good shooting team but tonight we were never really open because they're so quick and recover so fast. We didn't get many good looks."

Even Shoji's shot was not exactly the one the Raiders wanted.

After Kamehameha's Ikaika Hardie tied the score at 41 on a layup with 29 seconds remaining, Iolani called its final timeout with 17 seconds left to set up a final play.

"We wanted to find Vinny (Nip) on a curl on the wing, but they came out in a zone and that took Vinny out of the play," Mugiishi said. "Kawika came around as the second option, but it wasn't exactly where we wanted him. We were lucky to win."

Shoji caught the pass from point guard Barry Kang at the right elbow, quickly turned and lofted a high-arching shot that fell through the net.

"I was lucky to find an opening," Shoji said. "Barry made a good pass, and I was lucky to get the shot off."

On Saturday, the Warriors lost to No. 2 Punahou, 46-43, after Miah Ostrowski sank a baseline jumper and made a free throw with six seconds remaining.

"Second straight game, another guy steps up and makes the shot," Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "We wanted them to have to take a tough shot, and they did."

Kamehameha fell behind 9-2 midway through the first period but fought back and took a 21-18 lead with 2:35 left in the half. The Raiders ended the half with an 8-2 run to lead 26-23 at the break and opened it to 33-25 early in the third period, but the Warriors closed to 35-34 by the end of the quarter and stayed close until Hardie tied it.
