Defensive coordinator Jimmy Morimoto has been promoted to head varsity football coach at Baldwin High, athletic director Jon Garcia said.

Morimoto succeeds Chad Kauha'aha'a, who left to become offensive line coach at Division I-AA Weber State for his college coach at Utah, Ron McBride.

Morimoto, 31, a special education teacher at Baldwin, has been a varsity assistant for the Bears for 13 years. He was defensive coordinator the past four years.

"It's a dream come true to come back to coach my alma mater," said Morimoto, a 1991 graduate. "A big point was that our administration felt I was ready, so it was good to have the backing of the school and community."

"We felt he was the most qualified and most experienced (candidate)," Garcia said.

Morimoto said he is retaining all of Kauha'aha'a's assistants. Pohai Lee will remain offensive coordinator, he said. Morimoto will continue to run the defense.

Morimoto played football and was a state wrestling champion at Baldwin.
