Kahuku routs Moanalua, 88-59

 •  Mililani, Kapolei boys tie 1-1 to stay atop West

Kahuku High School has had lots of boys basketball talent before, including last year's team that started 7-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

Kalaheo's David Moore shoots over the Farrington defense. The Mustangs beat the Governors, 61-45, to improve to 5-0.

But the ability to mesh all that talent together into a single working unit has been as elusive as the OIA title. This year's Red Raiders might be different, if last night's 88-59 blowout of visiting Moanalua is any indication.

"Attitude-wise, we're different this year," said junior wing Junior Ale, who scored a game-high 26 points from all angles. "We're very close — like a family. The bond between the teammates is better than last year, and we have more discipline. It's not about revolving around one person, it's all five guys, plus the bench."

Kahuku, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-0 in the OIA East. Moanalua fell to 3-2.

The Menehunes led Kalaheo for much of Saturday's game before faltering in the final minutes, but they trailed 9-2 at the outset last night and never threatened after closing to 21-15 at the end of the first period.

The Red Raiders opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run and Moanalua never got closer than 15 points thereafter. After leading 40-25 at halftime, Kahuku opened the second half with an amazing 21-0 run to put the game out of reach.

"Athletically, they're definitely up there with the best, but they're not just athletic — they have a lot of skills, too," Menehunes coach Dan Hale said. "We wanted to make them work the ball, to see if they had the skills, but some of the moves they made were unreal."

Hale also praised the Red Raiders' relentless full-court pressure defense, which forced numerous turnovers and held Moanalua scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half. Menehunes guard Zach Pendergast, who had a game-high 20 points against Kalaheo Saturday, was held to four points — all in the first period.

"With their trapping, there was never even a moment we could get into our offense," Hale said. "They're coming at you fast, but they know what they're doing while they come at you."

Kahuku coach Nathan James said playing smart and unselfish are the keys to his team, even more so than the talent.

"It's doing what's best FOR the team instead of trying to be the best ON the team," James said. "These guys have a good work ethic, attitude and discipline, and it's starting to show."

Wayne West hit four 3-pointers and led the Menehunes with 22 points.
