MILILANI Mililani and Kapolei remained tied atop the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division boys soccer standings after playing to a 1-1 tie last night at Mililani High.
With one match remaining in the regular season, the teams share 6-0-2 records.
On Friday, Mililani hosts Leilehua (6-1-1), which defeated Pearl City (5-3-0), 4-3, last night. Mililani, Leilehua and Kapolei are challenging for first and second place in the West, which would give them a bye into the quarterfinals of the OIA tournament that begins next week. Kapolei plays at Radford, which tied Leilehua and Mililani earlier in the season.
Kapolei senior forward/midfielder Kea Hashimoto and Mililani junior defender Josh Edelo scored goals last night.
"It was exciting," Hashimoto said. "Until they scored."
Hashimoto scored in the eighth minute after receiving a long ball from senior defender Zachary Gaea.
Hashimoto's first touch put him in perfect position to gain an advantage on the defender, and at the same time forced Mililani goalkeeper Chris Burt to come off his line and defend the shot.
Bringing Burt out of the goal gave Hashimoto the perfect opportunity to shoot it over Burt and into the open net.
"The defender was coming across, so I flicked it over his leg and hopped over his leg," Hashimoto said.
Edelo scored with about four minutes remaining in the match on an assist from senior midfielder Torey Yamanaka. After a throw-in, Yamanaka crossed the ball to Edelo, who was positioned on the far side.
"I just tried to get my foot on the ball and direct it towards the goal," Edelo said.
The goal ended a streak of numerous misses by Mililani, which was thwarted by the heads, feet and chests of almost every Kapolei defender, who were preventing goals by literally throwing their bodies in front of the ball.
"It was frustrating," Mililani co-head coach Jeff Yamamoto said. "We were trying to create opportunities on throw-ins, corner-kicks.
"A lot of soccer has to do with luck, and we had our chances and got lucky in the end."
After Kapolei scored its goal, it appeared to collapse into its defensive third of the field, relying on long balls and counter attacks for its scoring chances.
"I think we just panicked," Kapolei coach Bryce Kaneshiro said. "We got the lead and played bunker defense."
Trojans girls knock off Hurricanes, 3-0
It was a good day for the Yoro sisters, who both scored goals as the Trojans (8-0-2) downed the Hurricanes (5-3-1), 3-0.
Mililani sophomore midfielder Stephanie Yoro scored the first goal in the 25th minute, beating one defender and hitting a 25-yard left-footed shot from the right side of the field that sailed over the goalkeeper's head.
Sarah Yoro, a senior forward, scored one minute into the second half also on a left-footed shot after beating one defender inside the penalty box off an assist from sophomore midfielder Natalie Wong.
Junior midfielder Cami Kageno scored the third goal in the 54th minute on a cross from senior midfielder Raimee Ortega.
