Judd's hot hand helps Kalaheo beat Kaimuki

 •  No. 1 Iolani plays No. 2 Punahou tonight

KAILUA — Said to be lacking a potent scorer this season, the Kalaheo High School boys basketball team found one last night in a crucial 56-50 victory over visiting Kaimuki.

Kaimuki's Isaiah Ano puts up a shot over Kalaheo's Cliffton Pires in the second quarter. The Mustangs improved to 6-0 with a 56-50 win.

Marvin Judd, a 5-foot-8 junior guard, poured in a game-high 22 points as the Mustangs — ranked No. 10 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improved to 6-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division. Kaimuki fell to 5-1.

Judd made only two field goals and finished with eight points in Saturday's victory over Moanalua, but hung 24 on Farrington in a win Tuesday and had 10 points in the first period last night.

"I feel more confident shooting and I've been hot the past two games," Judd said. "When we were warming up tonight, I knew this was gonna be a good game. Once I made the first couple, I figured I might as well keep shooting and the shots kept falling."

Judd's hot start helped Kalaheo take an early 11-6 lead and the Mustangs never trailed thereafter, but they could never relax either as the Bulldogs made several threatening runs.

After Chris Tumaneng's free throw put Kalaheo up, 41-33, with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter, Kaimuki went on a 7-0 run to cut it to 41-40 early in the fourth.

The Bulldogs trailed only 46-44 after Kekoa Onaga's steal and layup with four minutes left, but Judd answered with a 3-pointer and the Mustangs were able to hang on the rest of the way.

"We kept breaking down on defense, giving them uncontested shots," said Kaimuki's first-year coach, Kelly Grant. "But their guys rose to the ocassion. They're a whole lot better than they were in the preseason."
