Pairs of brothers help make hockey team jell

Sometimes, the roughhousing between you and your brother over the years becomes justified when you see him doing it to someone else.

Three sets of brothers make up half of the Skillz that Killz team that is playing in the USA Hockey Inline Regional Championships. They are, from left, 16-year-old twins Sean and Gabe Yoro; Cameron, 14, and Reese, 15, Kakuda, and Todd, 15, and Roy, 14, Ogasawara.

"If someone picks on me, he'll hit them or take care of them," said inline hockey player Roy Ogasawara, 14, of his older brother and teammate Todd, 15. "You feel more safe."

Roy and Todd play for Skillz that Killz, a Midget (17-under) inline hockey team from the O'ahu Inline Hockey League that is playing in the USA Hockey InLine Regional Championships at Mililani's 10 Acres Park. The event begins today and ends with championship games on Sunday.

"We fight a lot," Todd said of he and his brother. "I'm toughening him up."

If he goes up against Roy, he said he goes, "harder, I want him to get better."

When Todd isn't going up against his brother, he said he keeps busy trying to protect him.

When he sees other players picking on Roy, he said, "I get mad, and I try to get (them) back."

Two other sets of brothers are on Skillz that Killz — twins Sean and Gabriel Yoro, 16, and Reece and Cameron Kakuda, 15 and 14, respectively.

"One set of brothers are quiet, they like to surf a lot," coach Kaipo Cabral, 20, said of the Yoros. "Two brothers (the Ogasawaras) fight all the time; they talk a lot of trash. The other two (the Kakudas) jell pretty good. It's funny, because one's a goalie and the other skates out (as a position player)."

"Todd and Roy are the crazy ones, and Gabe and Sean are the more normal ones," Reece Kakuda said. "I guess we're both, kind of in between."

The tournament features teams in the following divisions: Mites (age 8-under), Squirts (10-under), Pee Wee (12-under), Bantam (14-under) and Midgets (17-under).

Teams representing O'ahu, Mililani, Maui, Kaua'i and Kona Inline Hockey Leagues are participating in the tournament.

Roy Ogasawara, 14, above, says his brother Todd, 15, has got his back as a teammate on their Skillz that Killz inline hockey team.
The championship team in each division advances to the USA Hockey InLine National Championships, July 30 to Aug. 6, in Voorhees, N.J., at the Flyers Skatezone.

The Skillz that Killz players like their chances.

"When we scrimmage the other teams, we keep up with them and we beat them," Roy Ogasawara said.

The members of the teams in the tournament were selected from divisions throughout each of the leagues. Skillz that Killz started practicing in the middle of January, blending players from Mililani, Kaimuki, Kailua, Kahalu'u and Hawai'i Kai.

"With a select team, it's harder to get them to mesh," coach Cabral said.

It helped to have instant chemistry with teammates who are brothers.

"We play alike, the brothers," Gabriel Yoro said. "We play the same, like how we skate and stuff.

"We know each other's playing styles and how to work together."

Sean Yoro said he likes playing with his brother, "sometimes, but not all the time."

Sean said they play hard against each other during practices, but it helps to play on the same team.

Cameron Kakuda also said it helps to have someone to talk to about the game.

"We talk about it every time after the game," Cameron said. "It's more helpful. Sometimes I don't see the stuff and he's there to help me."

While half the team's 12-player roster is composed of sets of brothers, they say all players are seen as individuals and teammates.

"We don't notice it a lot," Reece Kakuda said.

"I see (other teammates) as my other brothers, too," Todd Ogasawara said.
