North Shore swim series starts June 25

The Surf & Sea North Shore Swim Series kicks off with the Raging Isle Summer Sprint, a 1-mile race on June 25 from Sunset Beach to 'Ehukai Beach Park.

The race begins at 9 a.m. It is the first of four series races over the summer.

Registration for the Raging Isle Summer Sprint is $25 up to June 17, and $35 until the day of the race. T-shirts are offered for early entrants.

The other three series events are the Cholos' Waimea 2000 on July 9 (1.2 miles), the Surf & Sea Cup (1.2 miles) on July 23 and the Surf & Sea Challenge on July 29 (2.4 miles).

The fees remain the same for each race.

SPORTS ACADEMY

Several youth camps scheduled for Maui

The Maui Sports Academy will be hosting a variety of summer camps in late June and early July for youths who are looking to improve their basketball or soccer skills.

Programs include:

• A free NCAA eligibility and recruiting presentation for future collegiate student-athletes is Thursday at St. Anthony High School.

• Thirty high school boys basketball players have been selected for a camp that runs from June 19 to 24. The camp will place an emphasis on individual attention from college coaches for top returning juniors and seniors. It will be at Hana High School.

• The Boys and Girls High School Offensive Skills/Shooting Camps from June 29 to July 1 will give other high school players an idea of what it takes to play basketball at the college level. It will be at Baldwin High School.

• Youth Fundamental Skills camps in basketball and soccer for boys and girls who are entering grades 1 through 8 in the fall, designed for all skill levels and with an emphasis on having fun. The soccer camp runs June 27 to 29 at St. Anthony High, while the basketball camp is June 29 to July 1 at Baldwin High.

BASEBALL

High school players showcase at Mililani

Baseball Mentoring Program will be holding a college recognition showcase for high school and junior college players June 18 at Mililani High's baseball field from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Participants will be tested in the 60-yard dash, pitchers' velocity, infield evaluation, outfield evaluation, batting practice and in simulated games.

Cost is $250 per player. Each player will be provided an Internet Web page for one year, which includes a video; a scouting evaluation by former professional players and scouts; exposure to more than 50 colleges; and a T-shirt. The camp is open to ninth-graders and older.

The program is run by former San Francisco Giants player Jalal Leach, who also is a former scout with the Giants and Colorado Rockies.

BASKETBALL

Fundamentals camp set for Manoa Gym

The Sole Fundamentals Basketball Camp is scheduled for July 25 to 29 at the Manoa Valley District Park Gym.

Sessions will be held for boys and girls grades 4 to 7 and 8 to 12.

Camp instructors are high school coaches from Hawai'i and California, including Wade Nakamura, Leland High School girls basketball coach, who is a two-time California Central Coast Section coach of the year. Current and former collegiate players also will assist at the camp.

Cost is $100, which includes a basketball and T-shirt.

FOOTBALL

NFL junior camp for 12- to 14-year-olds

An NFL Junior Player Development Camp is scheduled for June 20 to 25 at Castle High School.

The free camp is a clinic for 12- to 14-year-olds that emphasizes different football position fundamentals in full gear. Each participant also receives an NFL practice jersey, football and bag.

Castle High's coaching staff will conduct the clinic.

Required waiver and medical clearance forms are available during business hours at the school's front office (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and athletic trainers office (after 4 p.m.) or at www.moanaluafootball.com.

Registration is limited to the first 150 who turn in completed forms to Castle's front office by June 15.

TENNIS

Junior sectionals start today on Big Island

The United States Tennis Association's Aloha Airlines Junior Summer Sectional tournament is today to Monday at Mauna Kea Resort Seaside Tennis club and the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

The event showcases some of Hawai'i's top juniors who are vying for ranking points and positions on the Hawai'i national team that will compete later this summer.

Matches begin at 8 a.m. today. The public is invited to attend.
