Robert Umiamaka, of Kane'ohe, caught this 112-pound ulua off the coast of Kailua, Kona, in March.

He was spearfishing with two friends and had to battle with his catch for a half-hour.

"It was 80 feet down ... he broke the reel off my spear gun," Umiamaka said. "He pulled me under, (and) I tried to pull him out."

Eventually, Umiamaka got close enough to use his knife.

"It was back and forth," Umiamaka said. "He pulled me 20, 30 feet under then I paddled back up for air."

So what does one do with such a fish? "I gave it to friends in Minali'i fishing village, in Kona," Umiamaka said.

Umiamaka's previous best catch was 40 pounds.
