Former lieutenant governor to speak at WCC

 •  Tips on how to better women's lives

The role women play in transforming our culture as politicians, writers, leaders, scientists, educators will be on display at Windward Community College starting today and throughout March, aka "Women's History Month." This year's theme is "Women Change America."

Former Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono

Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m., Windward Community College will show films on women who played pivotal roles in history. On Thursdays, speakers will be featured. This week, therapist Paula Scatoloni explores the impact of social pressure and the media on women's body image. Also: former Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono will discuss her life's experience. Gloria Moore will talk about women's health issues and psychologist Gary Francell will discuss relationships between men and women.

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH SPEAKERS
12:30-1:20 p.m., Thursdays, Akoakoa Building, Room 105 (except for Hirono's talk, which will be in the Paliku Theatre).

Thursday speakers: Paula Scatoloni of the Anorexia and Bulimia Center of Hawaii and Maureen Barcia of the Argosy School of Professional Psychology.

Topic: The impact of social pressure and the media on women's relationship with their bodies, and the connection to eating disorders.

March 10 speaker: Gary Francell, psychologist.

Topic: Relationships between men and women, based on John Gray's book "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting What You Want in Your Relationships."

March 17 speaker: Former Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono will talk about her life. She emigrated from Japan to Hawai'i in 1955. She graduated from Kaimuki High School in 1966, received a psychology degree from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa in 1970; a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1978, and served as lieutenant governor of Hawai'i from 1994-2002.

March 31 speaker: Gloria Moore.

Topic: Health issues related to women through their life stages.

March 16: "The Hours."

March 23: spring break.

March 30: "Heart of the Sea" (a documentary about activist Rell Sunn, who paved the way for women's professional surfing in Hawai'i during the 1970s.
