March is Women's History Month, and the National Council of Women's Organizations has several suggestions for making society more female-friendly. Among them:
• Get every woman to vote. Talk to 10 friends, family members, classmates or co-workers about the importance of their vote in every election and help them get registered. • Develop female political leaders. Sign up for one of the women's leadership training programs hosted by women's groups, including the YWCA, www.ywca.org. • Recognize women in the military. To learn more about the issues facing women in the military, visit www.wrei.org. • Be a mentor to women and girls. If you can't hire another woman, mentor young-er women in your organization. • Contact TV stations to complain about programs that glamorize plastic surgery. Let the companies that advertise during those programs know what you think. • Encourage a family-friendly workplace. Ask your employer to offer support for childcare, include on-site childcare, referral services, and flexible savings accounts. • Celebrate women's achievements. Create a book group dedicated to reading biographies about women and their amazing accomplishments.
