Buffanblu capture ILH title

In a shoot-the-lights-out performance, Punahou won its third straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball championship last night with a resounding 66-51 victory over Iolani.

The visiting Buffanblu (10-0) will now have two weeks off before starting the state tournament in quarterfinal action as the ILH's seeded team. Iolani (8-2) and the four other league teams will play a single-elimination tournament next week to determine the ILH's second state tournament berth.

A win by the Raiders last night would have forced a special playoff for the title tomorrow, but Punahou avoided that by sinking 23 of 36 field-goal attempts (63.9 percent) and 18 of 24 free throws (75 percent).

"This one is extra special because for us seniors, it's our last year," said Buffanblu guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay, who scored a game-high 21 points and has been a starter on all three title teams. "We have younger players, too, but we all get along well and it's great to see us get contributions from everyone. All the hard work we put in at practice really paid off."

Iolani point guard Hennasea-Sue Tokumura drives in for a layup against Punahou center Shawna Kuehu.
After Iolani cut Punahou's lead to 14-13 early in the second period, the Buffanblu sank shot after shot to go up 30-17 at halftime. They continued their hot shooting in the second half, opening the lead to 40-21 midway through the third period before the Raiders cut it to 44-28 entering the fourth.

Iolani, which came back from a 20-point deficit to defeat Maryknoll on Saturday, got as close as 54-42 with 2:11 remaining, but Punahou made 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal it.

"We all came to watch that game on Saturday, so we never felt safe because we knew this Iolani team can come back like they showed against Maryknoll," Dacanay said. "That's why we never let up no matter what the score was, because we knew anything can happen."

What made the Buffanblu's performance even more impressive was their production across the board. They out-rebounded the Raiders 24-18, got a combined 27 points from Sophie Merrifield, Tessa Sonobe and Ciana Aiwohi — much more than usual — and 19 of their 23 field goals came off assists, including five each by Shawna Kuehu and Christine Takara.

Kuehu, a freshman center, also had six points, seven rebounds and five steals.

"We also got inspired play off the bench," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "It was a team effort, as usual, and that comes from 15 girls going after each other every single day in practice, making each other better."

Iolani was just 19 of 47 (40.4 percent) from the field, but Raiders coach Glenn Takara said the Buffanblu's stellar play caused many more problems.

"It makes them tough to defend when everybody's shooting like that," Takara said. "They just played well the whole game, and all the credit goes to Mike and his staff and their girls."
