Kyono to play in NCAA golf

 •  Sing Chow PacWest's top player in softball

Rachel Kyono will be the lone golfer from Hawai'i in next week's NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships after her Pepperdine team qualified out of the East Region.

Pepperdine placed fourth to advance to the championships May 17 to 20 at Sunriver, Ore. Kyono, a senior and 2002 Kaua'i High graduate, shot 77-78-72—227 to finish in a tie for 38th place.

San Francisco senior Mariko Joan Shimozaki, a 2001 Seabury Hall graduate, shot 77-77-72—226 to tie for 26th.

Nebraska senior Merynn Ito, a 2001 'Aiea graduate, finished in a tie for 42nd place after shooting 73-82-76—231.

Jackson State (Miss) sophomore Kellie Kawahara, a 2003 Waiakea graduate, shot 83-85-80—248 to finish 100th.

Long Island sophomore Erica Chong, a 2003 graduate of Hilo, shot 97-84-93—274 to finish in 107th.

Men's Tennis

• UCLA senior Chris Lam (homeschooled from Kaimuki) and the seventh-ranked Bruins are hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, one of 16 regional sites across the country.

Boise State senior Ikaika Jobe (Punahou '01 of Wailupe) and the 31st-ranked Broncos are also hosting.

The winners earn spots in the round of 16, May 21 to 24 in College Station, Texas.

Baseball

• Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) Colleges junior outfielder Kyle Seminara (Punahou '02 of Mililani) was named to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team.

• Lewis & Clark College (Portland, Ore.) freshman infielder Jordan Shibata (Pearl City) was named honorable mention All-Northwest Conference as a utility player. Shibata led the Pioneers with a .404 batting average.

• Highland (Kan.) Community College freshman outfielder Dylan Libadisos ('Aiea '04 of Kapolei) batted .477 and led the team in hits (84), doubles (21), home runs (12), RBIs (50) and slugging percentage (.824).

• Diablo Valley (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) freshman second baseman Johnny Gentry (Saint Louis '04) batted 3 for 5 with a double and RBI in a 6-4 loss to Napa Valley College Saturday. Freshman first baseman Kepa Wong ('Aiea '04) went 1 for 3.

Softball

• Taft (Calif.) College freshman pitcher/first baseman Alexis San Nicolas (Leilehua '04) was named the Central Valley Conference's Most Valuable Player.

Freshman catcher Pikake Nutter-Gaudet (Leilehua), sophomore shortstop Lehua Yap (Nanakuli) and freshman second baseman Jalen Garcia (Campbell) also earned postseason honors.

San Nicholas had a .459 batting average, with eight home runs, 23 doubles and 51 RBIs. She was 11-4 with a 2.93 ERA as a pitcher.

Nutter-Gaudet was named first-team all-state and first-team all-conference, after hitting 10 home runs with 47 RBIs.

Yap was named first-team all-state and first-team all-conference after hitting .424 with six homers.

Garcia, who hit .392 with seven homers and 38 RBIs, was named first-team All-Northern California and all-conference.

• Puget Sound (Tacoma, Wash.) freshman Lindsay Fujita (Punahou '03 of Honolulu) was named to the all-Northwest Conference first team as a utility infielder.Ê

She batted .325 while primarily playing at second base. She led the team in runs (22) and stolen bases (9), and tied for the team lead in doubles (7).

Fujita also was named the NWC Player of the Week last week after hitting .667 with a home run, five RBIs and four runs scored in a two-game sweep over Pacific University.

Women's Water Polo

• Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) senior Cherise Saito (Iolani of Mililani) earned Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable-mention honors.
