Police this morning were holding a 23-year-old man as a suspect in the shooting deaths of two men and a woman last night at the Tantalus lookout area near the summit of Round Top Drive in Makiki.

According to a synopsis of the incident furnished by police, the suspect apparently had a taxi take him to the lookout area where some sort of struggle with the taxi driver ensued.

The taxi driver was shot about 7:15 p.m. next to a second vehicle which was parked at the lookout. The vehicle's occupants were taking pictures of the city lights and were also shot.

The taxi driver, 50, and the woman, 53, died at the scene while the woman's companion, 53, died at The Queen's Medical Center.

Police said the gunman then drove the taxi to a home on Round Top Drive where he robbed the occupants at gunpoint. They said the robber took personal property and a vehicle from the home and drove off. Police listed two women, ages 54 and 58, and a 72-year-old man as victims in the gunpoint robbery.

The stolen car and its driver were intercepted by police near the intersection of Round Top and Makiki Heights drives.

The man driving the car was arrested on suspicion of three counts of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree murder, carrying a firearm in public, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, first-degree robbery and three counts of kidnapping.

Police were withholding the suspect's name this morning saying charges had not been brought against him yet.
