When was the last time you visited Waikiki to enjoy the wealth of freebies? This weekend, or in the days ahead, play tourist. Go. See. Discover. There are activities, day and night, that won't cost you a cent. Well, you may have to shell out for parking (if you can't find free street space), but it might be fun to see and do stuff that visitors come here to explore. So, get going!
ALOHA FRIDAY KING'S JUBILEE & FIREWORKS
From 6:30 p.m. Fridays, Hilton Hawaiian Village. There's a $12 fee (one drink included) for poolside seats in a beachfront show that honors King David Kalakaua. The fireworks display at 7:30 p.m. is free. Also viewable from nearby hotels or shore areas such as Kuhio Beach or Magic Island. 949-4321.
CHANGING OF THE KING'S GUARD CEREMONY
From 6:15 nightly, King's Village Shopping Center, 131 Ka'iulani Ave., opposite the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani hotel. After retiring the Hawaiian flag, the King's Guard (in uniforms replicating those worn by King Kalakaua's Hawaiian Royal Palace Guard) performs drill team skills. 944-6855.
STREET PERFORMERS
Most evenings from 7 p.m. on Kalakaua Avenue, between Ka'iulani and Royal Hawaiian avenues. Impromptu acts — Silver Man, Gold Man, One-Man Band, the saxophonist and more — are loved or loathed (depending on how you feel about mimes) but provide informal fun.
U.S. ARMY MUSEUM OF HAWAI'I
From 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. daily except Monday, at Saratoga and Kalia roads. See historic uniforms, weapons and wartime memorabilia, housed in a shoreline battery. New: exhibit on retired Gen. Eric Shinseki, first Hawai'i native and Asian-American to earn four-star rank. 955-9552.
ART ON THE ZOO FENCE
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays on the Honolulu Zoo fence along Monsarrat Avenue, opposite the Kapi'olani Park bandstand. Meet the artists who create original prints, paintings and photographs. 923-4354.
LEARN TO MAKE A HAWAIIAN QUILT
From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. OK, if a quilt is far too challenging initially, you could apply the basics to a pillow or a cushion. 922-0588.
WALK OR JOG WITH MOTHER NATURE
You can get your daily exercise at Kapi'olani Park and savor the greenery and trees. Or head for Magic Island and soak in the shoreline vistas at sunrise or sunset.
