This past Tuesday, KGMB had telecast a tribute in
honor of Mr. Don Ho. Watching this special on
your father's life have brought back many fond
memories for me. Although I am much younger than
your father I remember the old Honey's Cafe in
Kaneohe. When your father and the Alii's were
playing at the old Waikiki Sands, my friends and I would make it out every chance we had to have
dinner, watch the show and hopefully be asked to
dance with the servicemen there. While watching
the special on KGMB, I saw a page from his year
book at Kamehameha School. I had notice a picture and the name Eugene Kaupiko. Eugene is
my first cousin, was a beach boy back then on
Waikiki Beach. He had passed away couple years
ago. To his wife and children, my deepest sympathy. Aloha

While serving in vietnam, I took R&R in Waikiki. The outrigger gave me an outrageously low rate in july of 1970. The highlight of our 6 day stay was attending Don Ho's performance at Duke Kahanamoku's in the international marketplace. He showed recognition to the military personnel in attendence and gave a performance my wife and I will NEVER forget, Don may you rest in peace and "Suck Em Up". After 38 years we went back to complete our Hawaiian experience and do & see the things we could'nt back then. I had no idea of Don's passing and it was a cloud ouer our visit however, it makes us cherish even more being touched by this wonderful man. He said every time I tape on my glass you "Suck Em Up" and the girls would refill our glasses. God bless you Don we will love you forever. R.Luzzi

I think Don did have a gift. He was an entertainer who really related well to his fans before, during and after his shows.
It was natural for me to go to his show, as that seems to be the mandate in the back of one's mind when one comes to Hawaii. He truly epitomized the aloha spirit of Hawaii. His show was a lot of fun.
And no matter where you were from, he would keep the conversation going. I'll remember you. Thanks for the happiness.

What can I say that has not already been said? My deepest condolences to the entire Ho Family and Ohana.
Don was a big part of my life in the early 80's from when I first saw him at the Polynesian Palace. Remember on my 24th birthday - my friends surprised me with a birthday cake at his show - and Don brought me up on stage and sang Happy Birthday to me. Was invited backstage to talk - and would periodically go and see the show.
Hawaii will be a little darker - but the sea will have much sunshine and light when everyone travels to Hawaii. And Mahala to the family for the "show to go on and continue with his memories...."
Aloha Oe Don......

To Dayna, Lei, and the entire Ho Ohana, I was saddened to hear the passing of your dad and the feelings of losing my dad(Ted Makalena, Sr.) back in 1968 all came back to me. I remember back in the 60's, whenever the Hawaiian Open was being played or when any of dad's golf pro buddies were in town, he would always take them to see your dad at Duke's. Your dad would call him up on stage and dad would sing "Waipi'o". Those were the days! The last time I saw your dad was at the beachboy funeral for Uncle Chico Ho, a number of years ago. Hawaii has lost another native son, but he is in good company up there with Gabby, Iz, Aunty Melva, and my dad. The lights of Waikiki will be just a little bit darker from now on, because there will never be another one like him. Aloha Uncle, A hui hou

I will always remember Uncle Don for his believing in me. The first time I meet Uncle Don was in 1971, I was 7 years old. Patty and Linda Coble where sitting in the harem section. He was playing at the Polynesian Palace. My Father was overseas in Vietnam and Uncle Don sang the song "God Bless My Daddy". I wanted Uncle Don to sing it for me. So we had a note put on his organ asking him if he would sing the song, but he didn't. He brought me on stage to sing the song with him. I will always remember that because I was scared, but he made me feel that it was alright. He also told my Mother that whenever I come to the show he would have me sing. My Mother took me there about twice a month for the next six years or so. When he found out that I learned to dance the Hula he did not let me sing anymore. He would only have me dance. Because of Uncle Don I was able to continue my dancing as I got older. He will always be in my heart because he was part of my life. Aloha Christie

Aloha to a great individual that taught so many tourists about Hawaii and the Hawaiian people. As a soldier stationed in Hawaii, Uncle Don made us feel like we were the most important people everytime we visited. He and Haumea always made the family feel special years after we left the Islands for other assignments. I will miss him on future visits.

Don Ho has always been a familiar name to me as earlier as age 8 growing up in San Diego. My mom took my sister to Oahu for her graduation present and they saw Don Ho's show in 1979. Ever since then, I always wanted to see/meet Don Ho. That dream came true in 2003 when Don Ho invited the crew of the USS Constellation (including my husband, the kids & I) to the Beach Comber for an awesome show. Haumea, you and Uncle Don made us feel special and really rolled out the red carpet for us. Uncle Don was so generous and I know that he had a special place in his heart for those that serve our country and WE will always have a special place in our heart for him. Each and everyone one of us have fond memories of the show and the guests. The dark showroom really makes a statement that an era has ended.
After so many years with us we really feel part of our OHANA is gone. Not seeing Don in the corridors and only having the Don Ho show pictures around the hotel is a really different feeling.
We all knew how humble Don was and hope that us not having all the media hype will be how he would have wanted it from the place where he last preformed.
Aloha Don, we will always remember you!
Haumea, Jackie and all the Don Ho show family - our condolences to all of you.

We are sending our condolences to the Ho Ohana, we are so sorry to hear of Uncle's passing.
I first met Don in 1966 when Don & Alii's performed here in Seattle. I was a senior in high school and my friends and I all loved Don. They surprised me and bought tickets to the show that also included their neighbors after party. I was in Heaven.
One year later I moved to Hawaii, met this wonderful beachboy and married Don's good friend and classmate Geno Kaupiko. We lost Geno a year ago this past November, and Don was on the phone the whole time listening to his services down in his home village of Milolii the whole time. Uncle Don was recovering from his own surgery.
When Geno was going to Honolulu he would always take Don his dried Opelu!
Rest in peace, and God Bless.

There really is nothing left for people to say that has not alreadfy
been written. It is amazing, but all the messages have the same
flavor. He was that kind of person. Again, as a retired fighter pilot
from Viet Nam that sipped wine with you in 2005 on your stage
and sung with you...thank you very much. May 5,2007 will be a
special day as hawaii returns the best of the best to the Pacific

My family and I wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of the late Don Ho. My husband and I will always treasure the "good old days," when the sound of music, and golden voices of Hawaii so reflected our life style. Our mai tai glasses from Duke Kahanamoku's will always be a reminder of Don Ho and the good times.
We are so blessed that his family members are part of island community.

First saw Don on the Brady Bunch, then on cartoons, then on slot machines. Got to see him in April 2003 at his show. For ten buck we stood in front on an American flag and he put his arms on my shoulders and they snapped a picture. This guy was a class act. Lets make a huge statue of him a place in downtown Honolulu.

We were in Hawaii last August, with newborn grand-baby Lucy...who could only fall asleep listening to Don Ho. She is ten months old now, and listens to her Don Ho Gold C.D. three times a day with her bottle and nap. Her little face lights up, and she snuggles down in utter contentment the moment Tiny Bubbles begins....we were young newlywed sweethearts four decades ago, on R and R at the Duke Kahanamoku Club across from the International Marketplace, and Don Ho sang for young service men, and wives, with sweet love and appreciation for what they were doing. We were treated royally by one of the nicest, most talented performers we've ever had the priveledge to hear. God Bless the family~What a legacy he leaves behind, on the Islands who love their native son,the gift of his voice lives on

I would like to send my sincere Mahalo to The Honolulu Advertiser for posting a link to my humble page about Don Ho on my Fan Appreciation Website for his friend Danny Couch I am honored that out of all the hundreds of possible links you chose my site as one of the seven listed in your "Links to information about Ho's life career" There's one less Hoku(star)in the sky as Waikiki's night is a little bit darker since Don's passing.
I attended a HAPA concert that evening when Nathan Aweau took the microphone and announced to us that Hawai'i's music legend had passed. It was a somber concert with tears, some special chants and several songs done in Don's memory.
My deepest Condolences to his ohana, as well as his fans and friends all over the world touched by his music and persona. Aloha Oe

As a teenager, I was glued to the TV when the Don Ho show came on TV. I watched his show every week, and dreamed that someday I would go to Hawaii and tell him what a difference he made in my life. It took me 40 years, but I made it there in September 2005 and in May 2006. I went to his show each time and when he heard my story, he gave me a big hug and kiss. I told him that I will always love you, and he told me the same. We had this wonderful connection. He loved talking to my husband about being in the service and flying airplanes. He brought my husband on stage to sing a song with him and they reminissed about the military. It was a magical connection and gift to be with him those times. I had a feeling that I needed to see him soon, and now I know why. I'll always love you Don

When I was 13, in 1967, my parents got to meet in Hawaii for R&R when my dad was in the Air Force & stationed in Vietnam. My mom brought home the "Tiny Bubbles" album to me, AUTOGRAPHED. I was really taken with his music and nearly wore it out. My whole family loves the album and I am very sad for him to be gone. He was such an entertainer on television or his stage and so nice to his audiences. I hope it helps his family to know he was so well loved. His memory is carried close to the hearts of his fans all over the world. He'll be missed. Hawaii will be missing part of it's allure.

I have been seeing Don's shows since 1967 as a young airline stewardess. He would let us in "free" and waive the cover charge for his "Ho Harem" young ladies' group & we would be seated up front. I followed him thru the years from Duke's to the Ohana Beachcomber and his shows always held the magic of Aloha & Ohana. Many of us have returned thru the years bringing our grand children to see his show. Everyone loved Don and Don loved everyone. He and his music made Hawaii so special for so many. I'll raise my "Suck 'em Up" glass and sing "I'll Remember You". See you on May 5th.

Don Ho was a great American. He respected his heritage and the culture of Hawaii, and yet participated in the mainstream as an Air Force veteran, popular recording artist, and entertainer who toured the United States. He could be a role model for how to bridge cultures and race. However, not everyone has the assets of Don's tremendous talent in which he could express love and understanding of humanity, and a lot of fun.

What a first-class showman you were, right up to my last seeing you in October, 2005! And what memories you leave with me! I still have the "Suck em Up" glass you drank from and left on your Cadillac dashboard when you drove my friend and me to a party back in 1967. I always cherished it as a souvenir and I will now drink from it on May 5 in a toast to your wonderful life. My husband and I vacationed in Hawaii many times and we never missed seeing the Don Ho Show. My husband and I first saw him in 1969 while on R&R in Hawaii and then on our may trips back made sure his show was on our schedule. What amazed me the most about Don was the time he spent with folks after his shows. He made you feel so special. My husband lost his battle with cancer in 2005 but the most precious picture I have is an autographed one with Don Ho, my husband and I. Of course, another prized possession is the "Suck Em Up" glasses we purchased back in 1969. Don Ho is a special individual who doesn't come along very often. He will be missed.

Don Ho has been such an important part in all of our lives. Memories of growing up in Hawaii, go hand in hand with the sweet melody of the songs he sang to us. It feels like we've all lost a special family member. Our deepest aloha to the Ho family. He's not gone...just gone on.

Dear Ho Family,
I am greatly sadened by the death of Don Ho. I had the privelege of living on Oahu a few years back, and always think of Hawaii when I hear Don Ho's music. I loved his smooth, and easy going style. He was the embodyment of the aloha spirit. He will be greatly missed.

Again, our warmest condolences to Don's Ohana's -- we do miss him very much. My wife, Karen and I, took a couple of trips to Hawaii in the past 5 years and did see Don's Shows. I had a picture from 1969 when I took a 5 days R&R from overseas, and asked him if he could signed it -- and he did ... as well as take a picture with us. It was a wonderful evening. He will be missed. May God comfort him eternally.

My deepest condolences to Haumea and the entire family. To you Hoku ... I hope you try to continue singing in your Dad's tradition. I am a professional singer & first samg Don's songs way back in the middle 60's, and have been singing those great tunes ever since. While I was in Vietnam in 1969, I took a 5 days R&R and came home to Hawaii (Kailua, Kona). Instead of going to Kona to visit the family, I decided to take in one of Don's shows at the International Market Place. I was there alone, when Don asked if there was anyone in the audience without a date and there was only two people that stood up - myself and a slightly older woman. He had us come up on the stage, where he had us dance while he sang a beautiful love song. It was a memorable evening. May God take Don in - eternally.

Uncle don ho, Uncle gabby, and braddah iz all in the same room, what a concert. I can only imagine the sweet beautiful music there three great legends are making right now. As a fellow musician here in hawaii nei, it is the aloha spirit that these three great insivisuals have shown. That will live through me as well as other musicians. Never getting to meet uncle don and uncle gabby, I still feel as one of my ohana has passed. Is it something that we as hawaiians feel cause of the aloha spirit that we share, who knows. I do know this. My sincere condolences to the Ho ohana, he will be missed and loved. To all the great hawaiians that have left us, you will not be forgotten. Please look down on us, and help us never forget the aloha spirit, and sing a song for all of us. Aloha.

As a child, everywhere you went around the Mainland everyone would ask "Do you know Don Ho?" Well...of course, I sang Tiny Bubbles and made silly versions of it as I grew older but I always loved the man. He did show the world what "ALOHA" meant to us islanders. When my co-worker told me that Don Ho made his final exit, i was shocked and saddened as I would any member of my family. My deepest and sincere condolences go out to the Ho family. My father stopped and asked him a question about a secretary of his from years before. He was very gracious and pleasent...always made time to talk story. I grew up listening to Don Ho Gold and memorized many of the songs. I was also fortunate to see Uncle when he was at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in 1982. It was a great show that I will never forget. Don Ho added strings, horns and harp to his show at the Polynesian Palace in 1971. I was the harpist. Don was gracious and very proud of all the musicians, singers and dancers. It was a fabulous show! For four years, it was my privilege to be part of those packed houses twice a night. I've never meet the master showman, the ambassador of Hawaii entertainment. But I can recall singing his song "tiny bubbles" in cadence during my military training and induction into the military. I was associated with the "DON" as coming from the islands, the island of Hawaii, once every one knew, and not just in the military, where I was coming from. The "DON" would automatically come to everyones mind. He is physically not with us among the living nor will he be missed by me because he still lives in the minds, heart, and soul of Hawaii forever. I've never seen him personally at his shows or meet him. But he instilled in me the comfort that you don't have to be in Hawaii to feel the "Aloha", but to give "Aloha" is what Ohana is all about no matter in what part of the world you live in.

It seems like there is no perfect time to say goodbye. Don Ho was everyone's friend. In 1965 I was on R&R from Vietnam. My cousins took me to Duke's to hear Don and the Alei's. Then we met Mr. Lee, the writer/composer of I'll Remember You". Their contributions to the sounds of Hawaii are indelibly etched on my heart and mind.

My first introduction to Don Ho was on the radio in 1965. I thought then what a smooth mellow voice that represented the Islands, when most of us had grown up listening to Hilo Hattie. I was most fortunate to see him perform at the Melodyland Theatre, which was then across the street from Disneyland. My girlfriend and I even went to the Grand Hotel down the street where he was staying hoping to get a glimpse of him up close. For over 40 years I have enjoyed listening to his music. His beautiful haunting I'll Remember You, is the song I have asked for when my days here on earth are over. On Saturday night at a party I was at, we all paused and "sucked em up" for Don one last time. Aloha my friend...

Dear Sir,
To the people of Hawaii:
Waikiki lost a wonderful friend, a true friend. For most of the last half of the last century Don Ho welcomed the people of the world to the islands of paradise, the beautiful eden gardens known as Hawaii.
Akua has now called Don home, God welcomed Don Ho to paradise, as Don welcomed all of us to his home, Hawaii.
He was more than an amassader of the Islands, He was an icon who will be saldly missed by more people throughout the world than most people could ever fathom.
Don Ho was a performer, an entertainer, a singer, father, grandfather, a former member of the Air Force and more.
For me, he was the first to welcome me home. I represent a small group from a generation from the 1960's. I was in uniform when wearing one was not popular. Just out of the Michelin rubber plantation in Sunny South Viet Nam during the first week ofJuly of 1969, I was lucky enough to get an R&R (leave) for a week to Honolulu. I was a member of the Twenty-Fifth Infantry Division and I have yet to visit Schofield barracks.
While I was wearing civilian clothing--it was easy to pick out a GI from the rest of the crowd; we had short haircuts in day when the rest of the world wore theirs as long as possible. As I walked down the street on July third near Waikiki Beach with my, then fiance', a small group of long hairs from the mainland threw firecrackers at us. Apparently they liked seeing the GI just out of the bush duck and start to run for cover.
Later that evening while in attendance at Duke's during a Don Ho show he asked that all servicemen and women stand. I was shocked and bewildered but followed orders. We got applause from the rest of the those in attendance. I got goose flesh. As we stood he welcomed us home. No one else did. Not from the mainland, not from friends or neighbors, no one but Don Ho. It was not a popular war and people just didn't want to talk about it. The second time I was welcomed home was in the year 2003. From William, 'Pila of Hawaii" Chiles an author, lecturer who lives on the Big Island of Hawaii and wrote the book, "The Secrets and Mysteries of Hawaii. And he welcomed me home via the internet. That, after Don Ho welcomed me home some 34 years earlier.
Hawaii is called paradise. It is the most sought after place to vacation than any other place on earth. There will be no other Don Ho as there will be no other IZ---
Don Ho was a god to thousands and thousands of men and women in uniform as he is a god to all others. I ask that the people of Hawaii remember him as he rememberd us. He sang a song called, "I'll Remember You."
He sang it for me when my wife and I visited the Islands 31 years later, "I'll Remeber You." I couldn't stop the flow of tears streaming down my face as he sang. He spent almost an hour with us after the show talking about the top entertainers he'd met in his time in the industry. He didn't have to spend a minute with us--but being so gracious--He did and he spoke from his heart--always from his heart. Isn't it ironic that his heart failed in the end. Maybe not so ironic really; maybe he gave so much of is heart away he forgot to save some for himsel.
Ever since that first time I touched foot on the Island of Oahu, I felt as if I was home, a very special kind of home. Don Ho re-enforced that feeling for me as I longed to go back , to return home again. It took me over thirty years but never the less I returned and I found something out; I found that I had carried Hawaii in my heart all those years and I still do. I have Hawaii in my heart, therefore, I am at home, I am at peace. I had found the Aloha spirit tha he gave me as he gave others who were in his presence.
For all his family and friends Pamela my wife, and I offer our sincere condolences.
With kindest regards, Aloha, Mahalo Nui Loa
Gerald A Van Slyke
If you would send this on to the family, I'd appreciate it--
PS --38 years ago I was sent to a place that no one wanted to go while in uniform and it was an unpopular war and our president was a Texan.
I have a son who chose to be a Marine and is now in a place where no one wants to go, it is an unpopular war and the president is a Texan---
He too got to a Don Ho show--he to was asked to stand--he too was welcomerd home-- by Don Ho.

I first saw Don while on R & R with my soldier husband, who was fighting in Viet Nam. We danced to Tiny Bubbles.
The next time I saw him was 30 years later--he was so charming, hugged me,and called my husband Brother when we told him of our fist visit. We brought our 25 year old son to the show. I had a special pin that i brought along, and asked Don Ho if He would sign it, and he asked me,"what is this?", and i mentioned to him it was a special pin i recieved from my job at the Hospital i work at,and it would be an honor if he would sign it! He asked me my name, and wrote it, and signed his name! People who have seen it said, "You are so lucky to have seen him, and get his autograph!

My husband and I were so fortunate to be able to attend Don Ho's show on August 4th to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a truly magical evening and one we will never forget. It was extra special as Don's son was there that evening and performed Tiny Bubbles! My mother loved Don Ho for centuries and I would not have dreamed of going to Waikiki without seeing Mr. Hawaii". Any time I think of Hawaii I will always thing of Don Ho.

I never met Don Ho personally but knew him
ever since I was a little girl living here in
Hawaii. May his family be comforted in
knowing that all of Hawaii loves him and will
miss him dearly.

I just wanted to offer my condolonces. Don Ho was one of Hawaii's memorable entertainers, who lasted a whole lifetime. I was so sad to hear about his passing... But I know that he's in heaven, looking down on us in Hawaii. May I offer my deepest sympathy, prayers and blessings at this difficult time. And I just wanted to share that "Don Ho" was loved by everyone... My son, Bubbles, ( Tiny Bubbles ) played on the baseball team that won the World Series Championship in 2005. They talked about Don Ho, and two of our Hawaii boys said they didn't know who Don Ho was. I was kinda hurt that they didn't know, but Don Ho sent us his CD's and other stuff. Mahalo, now we have a collectible, that means the world to us. Thank you Don Ho for all that you gave Hawaii. You will be missed dearl

One night after Don's show, my friends and I were outside talking to him and taking photos and he told me he wished he was my next door neighbor because I was so funny :)) He will be missed very much. Rest in Peace Don and stop by anytime and see me. We will all be together again one day for a big kanekapila in the heavens.

My mother LOVED Don Ho. From the
moment she first saw him on TV till the
day she passed (12/6/6), he always
brought a smile to her face. Growing up
my Dad was in charge of TV. However,
when Don was on the tube-my mother
took over the TV, no questions asked.
For the past 35 years I have lived in
Hawaii but Mom was only able to visit
me twice. Both times I knew I had to
take her to see him. I have a photo of
them that shows just how good he
made her feel-that smile she had when
he hugged her was the prettiest smile
we ever caught on film!
As much as Don will be missed, I am
happy for my mother because I know she
is smiling that smile, and she will get to
hear his beautiful voice, once again.
Mahalo Don for giving Mom so much joy!

My Dad knew your Dad from young boy time and was So Happy to have us kids go to his shows and go
back stage and be treated like Family. He was Soft/Kind/Gentleman on and off stage. Your Dad showed so much "REAL ALOHA" that I could feel it everytime I saw him. We as others spent frequent
family events as far back as the sixties at his shows. We all walked out HAPPY we went. To Uncle
Don's Family as My children came to know your Dad. God needed another Hawaiian to Sing with the Angel's in Heaven so his journey continues " TO THE END OF TIME". Who knows, maybe your Dad is on the HAWAIIAN WELCOMING COMITTEE. From My Family to Yours it's comforting to think that Our Dad's are at Peace, no more pain, no more tears just Everlasting "ALOHA"
