Hawaii Polo Club will hold Al Lopaka tribute

 •  Trail can be rewarding, but tricky to navigate

The Hawai'i Polo Club will hold its annual Al Lopaka Day on Sunday, featuring remembrances of Lopaka and a live band performing many of his greatest songs.

There will be two matches beginning at 2 p.m. at the polo grounds in Mokulei'a. Gates open at 11 a.m. Admission is $7. Those with military identification are admitted on a two-for-one basis.

Lopaka was an entertainer and polo enthusiast who died in 1985 at age 42 after being thrown from his horse.

SWIMMING

DUKE'S OCEAN MILE SWIM ON AUG. 25

Entries are being accepted for the 2007 Duke's Ocean Mile Swim to be held Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. on the beachfront of Duke's Waikiki. Check-in at 8 a.m.

There is a $25 entry fee per swimmer. No entries will be accepted on race day.

PADDLEBOARD

HAWAI'I CHAMPIONSHIP SET FOR AUG. 25

The Hawai'i Paddleboard Championship, part of Duke's Oceanfest, will be Aug. 25.

The 10-mile race will start at 11 a.m. at Maunalua Bay in Hawai'i Kai and finish in Waikiki at the Duke Kahanamoku statue.

Entry fee is $40, and an extra T-shirt is $15.

The cut-off time for the race is 2 hours, 30 minutes.

RODEO

ALL-GIRLS EVENT SEPT. 8 AT KUALOA RANCH

The 15th annual Zip Memorial All-Girls Rodeo is set for Sept. 8 at Kualoa Ranch, beginning at 9 a.m.

The event is expected to draw more than 120 competitors from around the state.

Events will include 4D open barrel racing, 4D pole-bending, breakaway roping, dally team roping, steer undecorating, calf mugging and goat-tying.

CYCLING

REGISTRATION FOR CENTURY RIDE OPEN

Registration is now open for the 26th annual Honolulu Century Ride on Sept. 30.

The fun ride, which begins and ends at Kapi'olani Park, offers 20-, 25-, 40-, 50-, 75- and 100-mile courses.

All riders are required to wear helmets during the event, and children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

RUNNING

MAHALO 5K ON SUNDAY AT MANOA REC CENTER

The Mahalo 5K will be Sunday, starting at 7 a.m. at the Manoa Rec Center.

Runners can sign up and pick up packets tomorrow at the Running Room on Kapahulu Ave., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost is $25, or $30 on race day. Participants will receive a disposable camera, T-shirt and refreshments.

The race, sponsored by Mid Pacific Road Runners Club, Fuji Film and Pictures Plus, will honor Uriel "Tesh" Teshima for his photographs of athletes over the past 30 years.

WINDWARD HALF MARATHON SEPT. 9

The Windward Half Marathon will be Sept. 9 starting at 6 a.m.

There will also be a 5K, 1K and 100-yard keiki dash.

All races will start and finish at Kailua Intermediate School.

Cost is $30 for the half marathon, $25 for the 5K (race starts at 6:20 a.m.), $15 for the 1K (race starts at 8 a.m.) and $10 for the keiki dash, ages 6 to 13 (race starts at 8:30 a.m.)

The wheelchair half marathon will start at 5:50 a.m. and the wheelchair 5K will start at 6:10 a.m. The costs are $30 and $25, respectively.

Active duty military and family members can deduct $5 from the entry fee.

The registration deadline for the races is Aug. 24. After Aug. 24, fees increase by $5 for each race, and a T-shirt is not guaranteed.

Proceeds will benefit the Windward Chapter of the Boys and Girls Club of America.

BASKETBALL

COUCH POTATO HOOPS LEAGUE STARTS SEPT. 9

The Couch Potato Basketball League, for men and women 6 feet and under, will start Sept. 9.

Games will be played Sunday mornings at Halawa Gym. There will be 13 games (nine regular-season games and four playoff games).

The cost is $600 per team.
