Kapolei quarterback Mason Koa's first completion went for a touchdown, and a stingy defense took care of the rest in a 14-0 victory over visiting Damien last night in a non-league game.

Koa, who missed on his first three passes, connected with Chase Alcott on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 4:49 left before halftime, and Nacho Martinez's extra point made it 7-0.

Earlier in the drive, Koa moved to receiver and caught a 15-yard pass from Noah Pascua.

Kapolei spoiled the Damien coaching debut of Brian Derby, a former University of Hawai'i offensive lineman.

The Monarchs gained just 199 yards.

"We just didn't do a good job sustaining any kind of drives," Derby said. "They did everything we expected them to do. We didn't capitalize on what they were giving us. They played very good, aggressive defense as always."

Koa finished 11 of 23 for 94 yards. He also rushed 16 times for 78 yards in guiding the Hurricanes' triple option offense.

"He can break down a defense with his legs," said Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez. "He can run and do a lot of things for us."

Koa also threw three interceptions.

"It was a typical preseason game. We made a lot of mistakes, a lot of turnovers," Hernandez said.

Damien's best chance to score came in the third quarter when it had third and two from the Kapolei 15. But a 2-yard loss on a running play and an incompletion turned the ball over to Kapolei.

"Defensively, we played pretty well. Anytime you hold an opponent to zero, you're happy," Hernandez said.

An 18-yard touchdown run by Cyril Ontai with 32 seconds remaining ended all doubt.

"We were trying to keep it on the ground and grind it out and just trying to end the game there," Hernandez said. "Scoring at the end like that was a nice way to end it for insurance purposes."

Damien had five punts, two interceptions and turned the ball over on downs three times.

In the first half, the Monarchs' deepest penetration was to the midfield, and they finished with 84 total yards.

Damien's Kama Bailey, an Advertiser second-team All-State selection last season, had 19 carries for 93 yards.

"We were zeroing in on him. We felt he was the guy who was going to hurt us," Hernandez said.
