Saint Louis overcame a rash of penalties by cashing in on two of six turnovers to beat defending state Division I champion Kahuku, 21-6, last night to kickoff the high school football season at Aloha Stadium.

The Crusaders (1-0) won the rematch of last year's state title game, won by the Red Raiders (0-1), 7-6. Kahuku's eight-game winning streak came to an end.

It looked like both teams were still trying to shake the off-season kinks. Saint Louis was penalized 11 times for 105 yards, while Kahuku was caught 12 times for 78 yards. The Crusaders lost the ball on a fumble and an interception, while the Red Raiders gave it up with one interception, four fumbles and a muffed punt.

Saint Louis took a 7-6 lead into the second half before Tamatoa DeMello recovered a muffed Kahuku punt return at the 7, setting up for sophomore running back Vonn Feao's eight-yard TD run two plays later with 2:39 left in the third quarter for a 14-6 lead. About this time two years ago, Feao was helping 'Ewa Beach win the Little League Majors World Series.

The Crusaders sealed it in the fourth when linebacker Joseph Lacaden stripped the ball from quarterback Siatima Tapusoa's grasp, returning it 37 yards for a TD with 6:51 left.

It looked like it was going to be an offensive battle when the Crusaders went with four pass plays after taking the opening kickoff with Micah Mamiya connecting on his 65-yard TD pass to Lucas Gonsalves, who split defender Triton Oto and Aulola Tonga on the right side. Warren Spencer's PAT gave Saint Louis a 7-0 lead just 37 seconds into the game. Mamiya, the state Offensive Player of the Year last season, missed last year's championship against Kahuku with a broken collarbone he sustained a week earlier in the semifinals.

The Red Raiders cashed in on a turnover just before the end of the first quarter when Shiloah Te'o recovered a fumble at the Kahuku 36. Jray Galeai, who missed on his first three pass attempts, got his first completion on a 47-yarder to Jordan Kamae to the Saints' 5. But two plays for lost yardage and a delay of game penalty pushed Kahuku back to the 16, where Galeai hit Junior Mataafa in the left side of the end zone for a TD pass with 9:49 left in the half. But St. John Lessary III's PAT missed, preserving the Crusaders' 7-6 lead.

Galeai lost a fumble on fourth-and-1 from the Kahuku 48 with 32 seconds left in the half. Although the Crusaders took over at midfield, they failed on three consecutive passes by Mamiya and punted to end the half.

Mamiya played the entire game for Saint Louis, completing 13 of 28 passes for 139 yards. He threw one interception to linebacker Paipai Falemalu.

The Red Raiders auditioned two quarterbacks, Galeai in the first half and Tapusoa in the second. Galeai was 3 of 7 for 72 yards, while Tapusoa was 3 of 8 for 25 yards and one interception (by Joseph O'Connor).

The Saint Louis defense did a good job of bottling up Kahuku's powerful running back Mataafa, who had 35 yards on 15 carries. The Crusaders also registered five sacks.

Kahuku received the second-half kickoff, but fumbled away the ball on its first two series. But Saint Louis, despite having the ball twice inside Kahuku's 30, lost the ball on downs after the first fumble and gave the ball back on Falemalu's interception after the second fumble.

On Kahuku's third series of the second half, it did not lose the ball. But three false start penalties hampered that series in which it eventually punted.
