Michelle Wie was among 1,236 players who have entered the U.S. Women's Open, the first time the Punahou School graduate will go through open qualifying for a major since she was in the eighth grade.

The USGA released the list of approved entries yesterday. It was the fifth consecutive year the number exceeded 1,000, and this year's number was only slightly lower than the 1,251 entries a year ago.

The Women's Open will be held June 26 to 29 at Interlachen outside Minneapolis.

Wie, a freshman at Stanford, submitted her entry last week, well before the Tuesday deadline. She is exempt from the first stage of local qualifying because she played in the U.S. Women's Open last year, withdrawing during the second round.

Wie has chosen the Woodmont Country Club in Maryland as her sectional qualifying site on June 9. That's where most LPGA Tour players will try to qualify, and it will offer the most spots to the Women's Open.

Wie has played only once this season, tying for 72nd at the Fields Open in Hawai'i.

11TH SEED ADVANCES

Emmett Egger, the 11th seed from Issaquah, Wash., ousted No. 4 seed Sean Berman of Irvine, Calif., 6-2, 6-2, yesterday for his second upset in as many days in the Hawai'i International Tennis Federation Junior Tournament at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

"I served well today, got my volleys deep and was really covering the net well," said Egger, who will meet top-seeded Harry Fowler, of Houston, in today's semifinals.

Fowler advanced with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Brian Fang, of Hacienda Heights, Calif.

The other semifinal will match 14-year-old Mico Santiago, of Corvallis, Ore. against Robert Howe, of Sydney, Australia. Santiago is the No. 7 seed, Howe is No. 6.

Competition in boys and girls semifinals starts today at 10 a.m.
