A big part of TGIF's mission is to let readers know what's going on around town for the upcoming weekend and the week ahead.

So, getting a chance to partner with KGMB9's Around Town duo Malika Dudley and Byron Furukawa was a no-brainer.

Starting today in TGIF, the two longtime friends are bringing a taste of their Around Town segment that airs every Thursday morning at about 6:45 a.m. on the KGMB9 Sunrise show.

Their banter is the first clue to their friendship. Long before Dudley — who also does the weather for KGMB — was named the 2005 Miss Hawaii and 2006 Miss Congeniality at the Miss America pageant, she was a flower lady in Waikiki. (And also a third-degree black belt, bouncer and tandem surfer, but hey, who's counting?)

That's where Furukawa comes in to the picture. The St. Louis High grad was a DJ at the legendary Wave Waikiki, where Dudley would make her last stop between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Furukawa is no dummy. He would, as Dudley puts it, "keep me company through the end of my shift."

The Wave Waikiki is long gone, but the new chapter in their friendship is that they are going to share their Top 9 (KGMB9 — get it?) with TGIF readers on a weekly basis. We say welcome aboard ...

You never know what you're going to hear at a news conference, particularly from entertainers.

When Nicole Scherzinger and the Pussycat Dolls held theirs at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Scherzinger, who was born on O'ahu, was asked what her favorite Filipino food is (she has no favorite, more Hawaiian food), and why she had said earlier she wants to sing the Philippine national anthem at boxing champion Manny Pacquiao's next big fight. (She would, she said, but she wasn't pushing for it).

She was responding to an interview question in the Philippines when she made the comment.

At times, Scherzinger looked emotionally drained at the conference, and said she plans on staying "home" on O'ahu with family for a while now that the Doll Domination world tour is done.

Hope to see her around.
