Career: Community organizer in Chicago, civil rights lawyer, Illinois state senator, U.S. senator from Illinois

Family: Married Michelle Robinson, vice president of community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Children, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6.
