Free boating courses offered at Kalaheo High

Advertiser Staff

A series of Coast Guard boating courses will start Monday at Kalaheo High School.

Classes, which will be Mondays and Thursdays through March 22, will cover federal equipment requirements, boat handling, navigation aids, federal navigation rules, coastal navigation, radio communications, engines, knots and lines, weather and more.

The course is certified and meets United States Coast Guard, state and national boating law requirements.

Classes are free but registration is limited to 25 students. The manuals and workbook required for certification cost $30 for those who register early and $35 at the door.

Upon certification, students will be eligible for boat insurance discounts, one year free membership in Boat/US, and a discount on marine safety products.

To register or for more information, call 247-3793.

Two races in one: The seventh annual Commanding General’s Semper Fit Series 2001, a mountain bike race that covers 12 miles of varying paved and dirt paths, will start at 8 a.m. Sunday at Dewey Square in Kaneohe Bay.

At 11 a.m., the seventh annual Headquarters Battalion Criterium will take place, allowing cyclists 4 years and older to cover a flat circuit with left and right 90-degree turns.

In both races, participants must pass on-site bike inspections. Registration is $12.
