Marine copter battles brushfire
LAUPAHOEHOE, Hawaii The U.S. Marines were called in yesterday to help battle a brushfire that has disrupted traffic from Hilo to Waimea for three days.
Officials said the traffic jams on the Hawaii Belt Highway could continue through the weekend, as only one lane of the road is open at a time.
Civil Defense Administrator Bill Davis said the Marines are using a Chinook helicopter to dump up to 600 gallons at a time on the fire.
Traffic at the 28-mile marker of the highway near Kaawalii Gulch is being controlled by police who allow about 100 vehicles at a time to pass through and then reverse the flow.
