Marine copter battles brushfire

LAUPAHOEHOE, Hawaii — The U.S. Marines were called in yesterday to help battle a brushfire that has disrupted traffic from Hilo to Waimea for three days.

Officials said the traffic jams on the Hawaii Belt Highway could continue through the weekend, as only one lane of the road is open at a time.

Civil Defense Administrator Bill Davis said the Marines are using a Chinook helicopter to dump up to 600 gallons at a time on the fire.

Traffic at the 28-mile marker of the highway near Kaawalii Gulch is being controlled by police who allow about 100 vehicles at a time to pass through and then reverse the flow.

Bicyclist killed on Honoapiilani

LAHAINA, Maui — A bicyclist died yesterday afternoon on Honoapiilani Highway after colliding with a pineapple truck.

The crash occurred around 1:38 p.m. as Quentin R. Bowman, 28, of Lahaina, was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of the road, facing traffic headed in the Maalaea direction. Police said Bowman drifted into the lane of traffic and was hit by an oncoming Maui Pineapple Co. truck.

Bowman’s death is the second traffic fatality on Maui this year, compared with one at this time a year ago.
