St. Louis hands 'Iolani its first basketball defeat

Frank Rivers scored 20 points and JP Kanoa scored all five of his points in overtime as St. Louis held the league’s leading scorer, Derrick Low, to six points in a stunning 57-55 victory over previously unbeaten Iolani.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball game was played at Iolani.

Iolani, which could have clinched the title with a victory, is 9-1. Defending ILH champion St. Louis is 7-2.

Iolani rallied in the fourth period to tie the game at 44.

Jason Rivers added 13 points for St. Louis. Iolani was led by Bobby Webster (18 points), Bobby Nash (14) and Travis McGaughy (10). Low entered the game averaging 17.1 points a game.

Baldwin girls win again: Baldwin won its fourth straight Maui Interscholastic League championship behind Shawna Shimamura’s hat trick Thursday night.

The Bears, the defending state champions, completed their fourth straight unbeaten MIL season with a 3-0 victory over Maui at Keopuolani Park. Baldwin has won at least 52 straight Maui league games, and league officials are burrowing into old records to see if the streak is longer.

This year’s Bears went 12-0 in league play and are 19-1-1 overall.

Baldwin is a leading contender for No. 1 seed in the state tournament next Wednesday through Saturday on Oahu. Seeding will be determined tomorrow.
