Ex-Mayor Frank Fasi fined $15,000 by U.S. agency

Advertiser Staff

Former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi’s campaign committee has paid a $15,000 fine to the Federal Election Commission.

The commission had sued Fasi, alleging that he and his Friends of Fasi campaign committee violated federal law by accepting reduced rent at the Chinese Cultural Center, which is owned by foreign nationals.

The suit said Fasi and the committee paid reduced rent to the Longevity International Enterprises Corp. from "at least 1994 until November 1996."

Fasi has maintained he has done nothing wrong. Fasi’s son, attorney David Fasi, said there was "no question" his father would have won in court, but that paying the fine would have been cheaper than a trial. Going to court would have cost at least $50,000, he said.
