Kailua, down 21-2, rallies to win

Advertiser Staff

The Kailua Surfriders, held scoreless in the first quarter and down 21-2 at halftime, put on a furious rally to score a shocking 37-34 victory over Aiea in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Tournament basketball game at Mililani.

Kailua, which trailed 31-14 entering the fourth quarter, rallied behind Koali Castillo, Michael Cathcart and Samson Satele.

Castillo scored seven of his game-high 12 points; Cathcart scored all his eight and Satele all his seven in the fourth period. Satele scored Kailua’s final five points as the Surfriders outscored Aiea 23-3 in the final period.

With Aiea ahead 34-32, Satele scored a basket and was fouled with 1:35 left to play. He hit the ensuing free throw for a 35-34 lead.

Satele hit two more free throws with 24 seconds left. Aiea’s attempt to tie with a 3-pointer failed in the final two seconds and Satele rebounded the miss.

Aiea had a shutout midway through the second period before Ammon Kaleo scored Kailua’s only basket of the first half.
