Culinary Calendar


Friday

• Winemaker Michel Chapoutier, known as King of the Rhone, will be host for a wine-tasting dinner at 6:30 p.m. at Chef Mavro Restaurant, 1969 S. King St. Chef George Mavrothalassitis presents a four-course menu paired with wines. $95 per person, including tax and gratuities. 944-4714.

• Dean Fearing, "Father of Southwestern Cuisine" and executive chef of The Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, is this weekend’s visiting guest chef at the Kea Lani Food and Wine Masters event. Hawaii chefs Dave "D.K." Kodama and Sean Kinoshita of Sansei Restaurant and Sushi Bar, Kapalua, Maui and Honolulu, will share the stage at the Kea Lani Resort, Maui. Cooking demonstration and lunch daily, $45; signature dinners each evening, $98. 1-800-798-4552.

• Herbal Creations with International Syrahs/Shiraz, 5-6:30 p.m. at Sam Choy’s Diamond Head restaurant. David Nip from JMD Beverages pours wines; appetizers by chef Elmer Guzman. $20 per person. 449 Kapahulu Ave., 732-8645.

Saturday

• Pasta Party, a hands-on/demonstration cooking class for kids at Kapiolani Community College. From 9 a.m.-1noon, class is for kids ages 7-12; 1-4 p.m. class is for kids ages 12-17. Parents welcome to attend. Lori Wong is the instructor. $15 fee; 734-9211.

• Chef Ben Takahashi, executive chef of Seasons Restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Maui, will be the guest chef on "Island Chefs" cooking show with Kuualoha Taylor at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB Channel 9.

• "An Evening With the Chef," a guest chef dinner featuring executive chef Eric Faivre of The Orchid at Mauna Lani on the Big Island, 6:30 p.m. at the Ship’s Tavern restaurant in celebration of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider’s 100-year anniversary. The first of several events featuring a four-course dinner with wine pairings; $100 per person, including tax and tip. 922-3111.

Sunday

• Spring Scholarship Brunch, 7:30 a.m.-11:30 .m. at Leeward Community College, a benefit for high school students interested in LCC’s culinary program. Assorted pastries, fruits, salads, omelet bar, noodle station, pancakes, fish, chicken and beverages. $10 presale tickets, $12 at the door. 455-0475.

Coming up:

• Guest chef dinner at The Pearl Dining Room, 5:30 p.m. at Leeward Community College. Culinary students join forces with chef/owner Alan Wong of Alan Wong’s restaurant and executive chef Randall Ishizu of JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa, to present a four-course dinner paired with wines. $55 per person, plus tax and tip. 455-0475.
