Scholarship fund targets Hawaiian students

Advertiser Staff

The story of Makia and Ann Malo has touched a nerve in the community.

Apply this month

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is March 1. For an application, call the Hawaii Community Foundation at 566-5570, or toll-free from the Neighbor Islands at 1-888-731-3863.

The Hawai
i Community Foundation has received a number of calls from the public after the Malos were profiled in a Valentine’s Day story in The Honolulu Advertiser.

The two have established a scholarship fund to benefit the Hawaiian community, and callers wanted to contribute to the fund, said foundation spokeswoman Kim Vierra.

The Makia and Ann Malo Scholarship was created to help residents who plan to attend graduate school in the fields of law, medicine or dentistry. The scholarship is valued at up to $1,000 and is administered by the Hawaii Community Foundation.

"This is just a helping hand," Makia Malo said. "I had a helping hand."

He said the fund was created in memory of his younger brother, Pilipili Malo, and childhood friends and role models who had a significant impact on Makia while he was growing up in Kalaupapa, Molokai. Pilipili Malo died of Hansen’s disease, the same affliction that Makia has overcome.
