Panel rules in Kaua'i shooting

Advertiser Staff

LIHUE, Kauai — A psychological panel has concluded that murder defendant Howard Giddens understands the charges against him sufficiently to stand trial.

Giddens, 27, is scheduled for trial June 18 on charges he used a shotgun to wound Nelson Cuba and kill Colan Fernandez in his Hanamaulu neighborhood. He told police after the Sept. 18 shootings that he did not know the men’s names, but believed they were out to get him.

Cuba, 49, was sitting in his car at Hanamaulu Beach Park when he was shot.

Fernandez, 43, was fatally wounded while sitting in his Hanamaulu garage waiting for a ride to work. Giddens is accused of shooting both with a 12-gauge shotgun he said he stole from his father.

He is being held on $500,000 bail.
