Rice defeats Wahine, 57-53

The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team’s perfect road record came to an end yesterday in Houston.

LaTonya Sam scored a career-high 19 points as Rice defeated Hawaii, 57-53, in a Western Athletic Conference game.

"That was her best game of the year," Hawaii coach Vince Goo said. "She’s more of a penetrator than a shooter, but she was knocking them down in the first half from the perimeter."

Hawaii fell to 19-5 overall and 10-3 in the WAC. The Wahine had won all five previous road games this season.

Rice improved to 14-10 and 6-6.

The Wahine led 35-31 at halftime, but shot only 6-of-30 in the second half.

"They had 11 blocks, seven in the second half," Goo said. "We thought we should have gone to the free-throw line a little more."

April Atuaia scored 13 points and Crystal Lee added 11 for the Wahine, who outrebounded the Owls 48-36.

"We played really hard," Goo said. "We outrebounded them by nine (20-to-11) on the offensive end."
