Advertiser Staff and News Services

Kapaa Elementary School Principal Cliff Bailey died at home Thursday night at age 50, the state Department of Education said.

Bailey joined the public school system in 1982 and spent his entire career on Kauai. He first served as a counselor at Kilauea Elementary before holding the same post at Kapaa High and Intermediate.

Bailey became Kapaa High and Intermediate’s vice principal in 1987, and Kapaa Elementary’s principal in 1989.

"In the many years that Mr. Bailey served as principal with Kapaa Elementary School, he touched our lives in numerous, meaningful ways," said Kauai District Superintendent Daniel Hamada. "He will dearly be missed."

Shirley Kauahi, a former vice principal at the school, has been named interim principal.
