Hayashi wins opener of Pro Tour Hawai'i

WAIMEA, Hawaii — Hilo Municipal golf professional Kevin Hayashi battled wind gusts of 25 mph and held off California State Open champion Richard Barcelo to capture the first event of the $100,000 Pro Tour Hawaii at Waimea Country Club.

Hayashi, 35, who set the Waimea course record with a 9-under 63 in Tuesday’s first round, closed with a 70 for a 72-hole of 20-under 268 to earn the $18,000 top prize. Barcelo shot a 69 and finished two strokes back at 270 to earn $10,000.

"I’m so happy that I can’t feel anything," Hayashi said. "I’m very happy. I don’t know what to say."

Hayashi’s 60-foot birdie putt on the par-3 13th, and Barcelo’s bogey on the same hole put Hayashi ahead for good.

Honolulu’s Gregory Meyer shot 67 and was third at 271.

Pro Tour Hawaii’s second event in the 10-tournament series will begin on Tuesday at Waikoloa Village, starting at 7:30 a.m.
