The Maui Fire Department this morning said firefighters have contained a blaze that has blackened roughly 700 acres of brush in West Maui between Olowalu and Launiupoko.
Two engine companies, a tanker and two helicopters continue to battle the flames after crews worked through the night.
The fire started yesterday morning at the 1,200-foot level and burned to the Honoapiilani Highway, the main road that links West Maui to the rest of the island. The closing backed up traffic for miles and stranded thousands on either side of the highway.
