A 81-year-old tourist from Canada is in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Hospital following a robbery inside a Waikiki hotel bathroom this morning, police said.

The robbery occured at the Outrigger West Hotel on 2330 Kuhio Avenue shortly before 1:11 this morning, police said.

The elderly man and his wife arrived with their tour group at the hotel and were checking in when the elderly man went into the lobby bathroom, police said.

A robber followed the victim inside the bathroom, struck him on the head with a unknown weapon and stole his wallet, police said. The man suffered a head injury and was rushed to the Queen’s Medical Center, police said.

Police are reviewing hotel security tapes of the incident and are searching for the suspect who is described as a Caucasian man in his early to mid 30s, 180 to 200 pounds, 5-feet, 10-inches to 6-feet, wearing a dark blue or purple t-shirt with “Hawaii” in white letters across the front. He was also wearing green shorts and slippers, police said.

A representative from the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, which helps tourists who are victims of accidents or crime, said the organization is planning to provide assistance.
