State Hospital escapee arrested

By Brandon Masuoka
Advertiser Staff Writer

A 55-year-old man who escaped from the Hawaii State Hospital on Sunday was arrested by North Shore police this morning in Wahiawa.
Police arrested Thomas Kapoi on suspicion of second-degree escapee at 7:55 this morning, police said.

Kapoi was the fourth escapee from the hospital in as many months. All four have been returned to the hospital.

“From what I understand, he was very cooperative,” said lead Det. Preston Kamauu. “He didn’t put a fight. He actually verbally identified himself as he was approached from officers.”

Kapoi was last seen at the hospital in Kaneohe on Sunday at around 1 p.m., police said. Authorities said they considered Kapoi dangerous.

Kapoi has 18 prior convictions, including a felony drug offense in 1969 and a misdemeanor weapons offense in 1965, according to the Criminal Justice Data Center. He has been convicted of offenses dating back to 1965, including theft, escape, burglary, vagrancy and trespassing.
