Like New York Yankees great Yogi Berra once said: "It ain’t over till it’s over."

The Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division basketball showdown between Leilehua and host Pearl City last night appeared to be a rout early as the Mules jumped to a 26-2 lead after the first quarter.

Leilehua’s Eric Marshall gathers a rebound against Pearl City. Marshall scored 23 points to help the Mules improve to 5-0.

But Pearl City charged back to take a brief one-point lead late in the game, before losing, 74-70.

"That’s typical of our Pearl City team," said Chargers head coach Mark Tawarahara, whose team fell to 6-1. "We fought hard. We’re the smallest team on the court usually, but we never give up. We knew they would make something happen and we just ran a little short."

Terry Ayers’ field goal with 2:20 remaining gave Pearl City its first and only lead at 64-63.

John Dolac responded with a 3-pointer, which put the Mules back up for good.

Pearl City’s Clifton Weaver hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 72-70 with 2.9 seconds remaining. Ricardo Bachelor sealed the victory by hitting two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining as Leilehua improved to 5-0.

"Ricardo is a gamer," Leilehua assistant coach Jayson Kauwenaole said. "He’s just a ball player. He comes and he gives everything he’s got."

Leilehua’s Eric Marshall scored a team-high 23 points before fouling out with 1:47 remaining.

"He always has a good game," Kauwenaole said. "He’s a consistent player. There’s nothing more we can say. He always plays like that."

In the first quarter, Pearl City missed all 14 shots from the field and had seven turnovers. Ayers’ free throws with 3:03 remaining were the team’s only points.

The Mules used a man-to-man, 2-1-2 full-court press and 1-2-2 zone defenses throughout the first quarter. Most of their points were scored in transition off rebounds and turnovers.

"We told them it’s a long game," Tawarahara said. "We’ve got to work on defense, give them one shot as much as possible and we need to take good shots ourselves."

Pearl City’s first field goal was by Ayers 2:30 into the second quarter. The Chargers went on an 18-7 run to cut the deficit to 33-20 with 2:38 left before halftime. Ty Jarrett scored nine of his 24 points during the rally.

Leilehua led 39-23 at halftime.

"We were just too pumped up," said Tawarahara about his team’s play during the first quarter. "We just didn’t get the ball to go in. It’s happened before. Once we got calmed down and played our game, we were OK."

Pearl City went on a 41-24 run to open the second half and take the lead.
