Advertiser Staff Writer

The 81-year-old Canadian tourist who was bludgeoned and robbed early Tuesday morning inside a Waikiki hotel restroom died this afternoon, police said.

Norman Chaplan was on life support and died at 3:27 p.m. at the Queen’s Medical Center, police said.

Police arrested Steven Michael Hauge, 43, in connection with the robbery and beating. Police is now treating the case as a murder.

Hauge today was charged with a separate incident on Kuhio Avenue involving a 25-year-old man on Monday. Hauge was charged with second-degree robbery, two counts of kidnapping, first-degree terroristic threatening and first-degree burglary.

His bail was set at $100,000.
