Kahuku girls continue historic run

Advertiser Staff

Kahuku’s trailblazing girls soccer season continued last night as the unbeaten Red Raiders defeated Kalaheo 1-0 on tie-breaker penalty kicks after two overtimes in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Championship tournament.

Junior Makamae Rezantes and sophomore Krisha Kai put in penalty kicks after the teams had played 110 minutes without a score in regulation and overtimes at Kahuku.

The victory made history for Kahuku, putting the Red Raiders into the OIA semifinals and the state tournament for the first time. They also won their first Eastern Division championship in history and are now 10-0.

Yesterday’s other quarterfinal winners, who also earned state tournament berths, were unbeaten Mililani (1-0 over Kalani); Pearl City (2-1 over Kailua) and Aiea (2-0 over Kaiser).

The winners advance to semifinals on Wednesday at Mililani High.

The losers will fight it out for the OIA’s fifth spot in the state tournament Feb. 7-10.

Pearl City broke a 1-1 tie with Kailua halfway through the second half when Carmen Calpo scored with an assist by Chante Figueroa. It was Calpo’s 20th goal of the season.

Mililani improved to 9-0-1 on Jennifer Iha’s goal 5 minutes, 30 seconds into the second half.

JV: Mililani won the OIA’s first junior varsity girls championship, beating Pearl City 1-0 at Mililani on Veronica Deguzman’s goal 14 minutes into the game.

Twelve schools participated in the OIA’s first season of JV girls soccer. Mililani had a 7-0-0 record and Pearl City was 5-2-0, with both losses to the champions.

Boys: The OIA boys championship tournament begins today with four games at Aiea and Kailua. The first- and second-seeded teams from the Eastern and Western divisions will play today’s winners tomorrow at Pearl City and Castle.

Semifinals will be Wednesday and the championship game at 7:30 next Saturday at Pearl City. Mililani is defending champion.
