'Iolani holds off Kamehameha in OT

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

'Iolani’s perfect run through the Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball season barely continued last night at Kamehameha.

Travis McGaughy made a layup off a steal with 32 seconds remaining in overtime as Iolani defeated Kamehameha, 60-59.

On the play, Kamehameha’s Kolo Kapanui threw a pass to Caleb Spencer, but Spencer couldn’t come up with it and McGaughy was there to scoop it up.

"I saw him bobble it and I just went for it," McGaughy said. "The only thing on my mind was going to the basket and getting the layup."

Nalu Perkins had a chance to put the Warriors back up, but he missed a short jumper in the lane with six seconds remaining.

Iolani’s Tyler McCready rebounded the ball and was fouled immediately with 4.5 seconds remaining. He missed both free throws and a putback off the second miss.

The Warriors’ Willy Melemai missed a half-court prayer as time expired.

"We actually didn’t do a lot of things real well at the end, but it was just enough to get away with a win," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

Said Kamehameha coach Micah Kroeger: "Sometimes that’s the way the ball bounces. It bounces off (Spencer’s) hands and went into their hands."

Iolani (9-0) had a chance to win at the end of regulation with the score tied at 53, but Derrick Low missed a shot from the left wing and a desperation shot off the rebound as time expired.

"If help came early, we wanted him to dish off," Mugiishi said. "If it came late, we wanted him to take the shot. It was a good shot. It rattled in and out."

Iolani led by as many as nine in the first half. The Raiders led 28-23 at halftime.

Kamehameha (5-3) went on a 7-0 run to open the second half to take its first lead at 30-28 with 5:53 remaining. There were five more lead changes over the remainder of the third quarter.

Iolani built its lead back up to 50-43 midway through the fourth quarter. Kamehameha went on a 10-3 run over the remainder of the fourth to force the overtime.

Low scored 17 points and McGaughy scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half for Iolani.

"McGaughy has been great for us the whole year," Mugiishi said. "He’s hit big shots and made big defensive plays. He’s our only senior and he provides spiritual leadership for us."

Kamehameha’s reserves scored 23 points. Melemai came off the bench and scored 13 points to lead the Warriors.
