Jon Skaggs and Philip Tribe teamed to scatter nine hits and strand 14 runners as nationally ranked Rice defeated the University of Hawaii-Hilo, 11-3, yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game at Wong Stadium.
Jose Cruz had three hits and two RBIs and A.J. Porfirio hit a three-run homer for the second-ranked Owls, who improved to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in the WAC.
Johnny Dudoit had three hits and Keola Park and Nalei Sooto each had two for the Vulcans (3-16, 2-9).
Skaggs (4-0) allowed five hits over six innings, striking out seven and walking seven. Tribe earned the save with three scoreless innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The three-game series ends tonight with a 6 oclock game.
HPU earns split
Hawaii Pacific University and Cal State-Dominguez Hills split a doubleheader slugfest that featured 50 runs, 57 hits and 15 pitchers yesterday at Hans LOrange Park.
The host Sea Warriors won the second game, 12-8, after losing the opener, 19-11.
HPU sent 12 players to the plate to score seven runs in the sixth inning of the second game. Lucas Castien and Ryan Blood each hit two-run singles as the Sea Warriors overcame an 8-5 deficit.
Wade Taguchi, Daric Stith and Ikaika DuPont each had two hits for HPU. DuPont hit a solo homer and drove in three runs.
Blane Muraoka (1-1) allowed two hits and no runs over the final 2¡ innings as the Sea Warriors improved to 8-10.
In the first game, Steve Hindman hit a grand slam as Dominguez Hills (8-8) scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good at 10-5.
Stith had three hits and Taguchi hit a two-run homer for HPU.
