Baby whale stranded in Punalu'u
A 20-foot-long baby humpback whale was found beached this morning on the beach near Chings’ Punalu'u store on Kamehameha Highway.

Ehime Maru hearing begins with stakes high
Vice Adm. John B. Nathman this morning opened one of the Navy's rare courts of inquiry to try to determine what caused a fast-attack submarine to crash into a Japanese training vessel as it practiced a surfacing maneuver nine miles south of Diamond Head on Feb. 9.

Woman and baby die, three injured in car accident
A 31-year-old woman and a two-month-old boy were killed and three people were critically injured when their speeding car smashed into a large tree last night near Honolulu International Airport.

Advertiser to build printing plant in Kapolei
The Honolulu Advertiser this morning announced a tentative agreement to build a $70 million printing and distribution facility on 11.6 acres at Kapolei in West O'ahu.
