Abused in her childhood, "J.T." began smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol while in middle school. She was hooked on crystal methamphetamine and living on the streets as a young adult when she became pregnant with the child of a drug dealer.

Her daughter, 6, is healthy. But a second child born two years later was affected by her drug use and born prematurely.

Child Protective Services took custody of the daughter but allowed J.T. to keep the infant if she entered treatment.

It took 15 months for her to complete treatment. She has been reunited with her daughter.

How to make a donation
 •  Checks made payable to The Advertiser Christmas Fund should be mailed to
    Helping Hands Hawai'i
    P.O. Box 19155
    Honolulu, HI 96817
 •  Donations may also be dropped off at any First Hawaiian Bank branch.
 •  Anyone wishing to donate goods instead of money can do so at the Community Clearinghouse at 2100 N. Nimitz Highway near Pu'uhale Street. For details, call 536-7234.
J.T. has not used drugs for three years and eight months. She works as a life skills training program teacher's aide.

"It has taken hard work to get to where I'm at today," the 32-year-old said. "What I can do is be a good parent by being clean and sober."

J.T.'s younger child has asthma. Because J.T.'s apartment is next to a freeway, she wipes the unit down two to three times a week to keep it dust-free.

A vacuum cleaner would be a blessing, she said.

J.T. also could use a queen-sized bed for her children, who are sleeping on a futon. Boy's size 13 athletic shoes and educational toys also would be helpful.
