CHAZ INOUYE

Loyola Marymount sophomore Chaz Inouye thinks he knows the perfect way to prepare for college golf.

Not playing.

Inouye, a 2002 St. Anthony graduate from Wailuku, said that during the summer, he doesn't play any golf.

"I take just a little break," he said. "Usually, even back when I was playing junior golf, I used to take three months off."

It seems to be working.

Inouye became the first LMU golfer to earn back-to-back all-West Coast Conference honors after placing eighth in the WCC Championships last Wednesday. For his top-10 finish, he received honorable mention accolades.

Inouye led the Lions in five of eight tournaments this season, posting a low round of 68 in the conference tournament. He said similar to last season, when he was the WCC Freshman of the Year and became the third golfer in LMU history to earn first-team honors, he peaked toward the end.

While acknowledging that not playing in the summer likely affects his game at the beginning of the season, Inouye said playing right through also could have an adverse effect.

So, he'll relax and enjoy a summer vacation when he returns to Maui in May.

• Jackson State freshman Kellie Kawahara (Waiakea '03) is setting the standard for Hawai'i golfers.

Homegrown Report chronicles feats of former Hawai'i high school athletes. If you know of any deserving of recognition, give us their names, high schools and graduation years, colleges and sports. E-mail us at: homegrown@honoluluadvertiser.com or contact Leila Wai at 535-2457.

Homegrown Report appears every Wednesday in The Honolulu Advertiser.
"If I had five scholarships available, after the experience with Kellie, I would sign every one of them, sight unseen," Jackson State coach Eddie Payton said.

Kawahara was named to the All-Southwestern Athletics Conference team after finishing fourth (80-82—162) at the SWAC Championships last Wednesday.

"Kellie is kind of like a legacy to our program," said Payton, a former Minnesota Vikings player and brother of Hall of Famer Walter Payton. "It's not often you have a freshman come in and have that much of an impact on a program as she did."

• University of Idaho freshman Ayumi Hori (Moanalua '03) was named to the all-Big West second team.

She finished in a tie for 18th at the Big West Championships after shooting 81-80-83—244.

Her average was 79.57, with a low of 70 at the Colby Invitational in Carmel Valley, Calif., in March.

Selections were based on performance during the fall 2003 season and the spring 2004 season.
