Kaluka Maiava scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, the last with 1:59 left as Baldwin and Kamehameha played to a 14-14 tie last night in non-league prep football game.

An estimated crowd of 3,000 at Kamehameha's Kuniakea Field watched the defending Maui Interscholastic League champions hold off the host Warriors in the closing minutes to preserve the tie. It was the opener for both teams.

Maiava, a linebacker on defense, lined up as a tailback in short-yardage situations, netting 10 yards on five carries. He also had an interception that he returned about 15 yards to the Kamehameha 33, but the Bears could not capitalize.

His first touchdown came in a seven-play, 56-yard drive in which Bears' quarterback Kalehua Moniz completed a 14-yard pass to Kaniela Lau on third-and-8 at the Baldwin 46 and later a 17-yarder to Kahai Sevilla to the Warriors' 1, setting up Maiava's TD with 6:15 left in the second quarter.

But Travis Uale's 38-yard interception return for a touchdown and Kepa Gaison's PAT tied the score at 7 with 1:26 left in the half.

The Warriors took the lead in the third quarter on a 24-yard pass from Pono Kam to Aaron Nicholas with 8:26 left in the third quarter. The Warriors started at the Bears' 24 because of a personal foul penalty on a punt return on the previous play.

But later in the fourth quarter, the Bears went on an 11-play, 70-yard drive that killed 5:09 off the clock with Maiava scoring from the 1. Sevilla's PAT tied it at 14.

Cody Nakamura's enusing kickoff went for a touchback, forcing the Warriors to start from their 20. They went as far as their 42, but eventually lost yardage, ending the game on an incomplete pass from their 20.
