Quarterback Justin Ingalls appears to have picked up where his mentor left off by passing for three touchdowns and running for another to propel Punahou over Kaua'i, 35-12, yesterday at Alexander Field.

Kaua'i running back Brian Rodriguez finds a hole in the Punahou defense in the first quarter.

Ingalls, a junior who backed up Interscholastic League of Honolulu Offensive Player of the Year John Morris last season, completed 24 of 41 passes with two interceptions for 253 yards, including TD strikes of 11 yards to Brian Matsumoto, 17 to River Kim and 13 to Steven Dannaway.

Ingalls scored the Buffanblu's first touchdown on a 1-yard sneak, and Dannaway capped Punahou's scoring with a 53-yard run in the fourth quarter.

"I'm a coach, so (I felt) there's always room to improve," Punahou coach Kale Ane said of Ingalls. "But realistically, he did a pretty good job in game-like conditions."

The defending Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Red Raiders stunned the Buffanblu early when they recovered a first-quarter fumble at the Kaua'i 45 and scored five plays later on quarterback Kekoa Crowell's 1-yard sneak. The PAT failed, but Kaua'i led 6-0 with 6:49 left in the first quarter.

Mistakes soon began hurting Kaua'i. A mishandled punt near midfield gave Punahou possession at the Red Raiders' 25, where it scored six plays later on Ingalls' short run to open the second quarter. Kim's PAT gave Punahou a 7-6 lead, which it would not relinquish.

Later, a 28-yard punt return by Jay Angotti set up an Ingalls' 11-yard TD pass to Matsumoto. Kim's PAT kick made it 14-6 at the half.

In the third quarter, a heavy pass rush on Crowell by lineman Jonathan Overton resulted in an interception by defensive back Ryan Nobriga, setting up Ingalls' 17-yard TD pass to Kim that made it 21-6.

Early in the fourth period, Ingalls completed 8 of 9 passes for 76 yards on an 89-yard drive that ended with Dannaway's 13-yard TD catch.

Dannaway's 53-yard run with 2:41 left gave Punahou a commanding 35-6 lead.

Kaua'i scored on a 10-yard pass from Crowell to Kevin Cadiente with no time showing on the clock.

"Defensively, we had problems with some of the plays they were calling," Kaua'i coach Keli'i Morgado said. "We tried to make adjustments, but we never stopped those particular plays. We had game, then we fell apart in the third (quarter), but at least we finished. At least this early in the year, it was good to see fight in our guys."

Linebacker Dominic Elvenia and defensive back Lance Okasaki each had interceptions against Ingalls.
